Mission Statement
Our mission and aim are to improve the lives and promote the independence of local brain injury survivors. To provide support and advice to their families, friends and carers and to raise awareness of the life changing effects of acquired brain injury (ABI).
About This Cause
Every 90 seconds someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with an ABI from a variety of causes, e.g., falls, road-accidents, trauma to the head, tumours, and strokes. An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can happen to anyone at any time in their lifetime and every ABI is different. Coming to terms with the effects for individuals, their families and friends and carers, can be very distressing and difficult. Headway - Southampton is a local independent charity based in Totton near Southampton, that offers support, advice, and rehabilitation services to adults with an acquired brain injury (ABI) from across Southampton, West Hampshire and South East Wiltshire. Adult brain injury survivors are in many ways forgotten as for some their injury is, to an extent, hidden. It is easy for them and their families to become isolated. We provide our support through four pillars of support: • Engagement (cognitive) • Wellbeing (mental, physical, and emotional health) • Community (friendship, peer support, social media awareness) • Independence (everyday skills) To help our service users grow in each of these areas we offer a range of person-centred activities though either or both of our: •rehabilitation Day Centre, where service users can come and engage in a varied timetable of activities based on their needs such as social inclusion, unemployment, and mental and physical health. As well as activities in the centre, we also go out into the local community with a planned timetable of activities such as walking, fishing, sailing. •Digital Rehab Connect Service (DIRECT) which offers a variety of 1:1 and group activities, both on-line and in person including: -peer-support groups for service-users, family members and carers -counselling -mentoring support -digital awareness training “This gives me a reason to get up in the morning" Service-user "Headway, helps me to be able to meet people and make friends. Social activities, good structure for the week a friendly environment"
