About This Cause

WORLDwrite was founded 26 years ago. Its Charity Commission registration number is 1060869 and it has a volunteer centre, offices and studio in Hackney, London E5. Historically, the charity ran global youth exchange programmes and educational projects often reporting back ‘on film’. While maintaining global partners, its global reach and internationalist principles, the charity gradually evolved to become the film-focussed educational entity it is now. Today, the charity endeavours to realise its charitable objectives by providing free film and media training and by supporting young people to produce alternative programmes for broadcast on WORLDbytes, the charity’s online Citizen TV channel. In one sense we’re all citizen journalists now and the mainstream media gathers sound bites from us to extend its reach and provide an interactive edge. We’re allowed to text vote on shows, our tweets are read out on the news, an occasional mobile phone clip gets aired but where is the access to the training or expensive kit to allow us to contribute serious reports, alternative stories, to discuss our views and news? WORLDbytes, the charity’s pioneering channel, has stepped into the breach to ensure Citizen TV is both possible and taken seriously. Dedicated to advancing new knowledge, skills and ideas, the charity promotes excellence in citizen reporting and provides free training to young volunteer-learners which combines practical film-making with tackling challenging issues. We work with volunteer-learners to craft well shot programmes with something new to say. WORLDbytes’ film facilities and free training provides access to gear and tuition that individuals would never be able to afford otherwise. Uniquely, WORLDbytes has an open door policy, working with people from across the world and around the corner. We encourage a global outlook, critical understanding and aspirations for the best for all. Our programmes push boundaries, question the way the world is and make an impact. At WORLDbytes we aim high – while privileging content over style, our pool of professional tutors promote top end production values and broadcast quality standards to do justice to the ideas of our aspirant crews. Working with people who have often never picked up a camera before, we promote serious research and discussion and provide intensive practical training on shoots for actual programmes. We equip our learners to: do justice to challenging ideas; uncover hidden histories; film major debates; cover local and global issues and create scripts and mini-productions which send up newsworthy items. Volunteer-learners are taught in the studio and out on the streets, negotiating their way in public spaces to seriously engage with fellow citizens on key issues. Contributing far more than the usual sound bites, volunteer-learners plan programmes, interview experts, academics and policy makers, create scripts for lighter hearted items, form crews and learn to disseminate and distribute their programmes worldwide. We believe Citizen TV has a vital role to play in covering the ideas and stories rarely told, without the constraints of commissioners’ whims, mainstream “ratings” wars and fears of upsetting conventional wisdom. There is a different tale to be told and WORLDbytes’ motto is “Don’t shout at the telly, change the message on it”. It is now twenty six years since we set up WORLDwrite and we are proud to have: *Worked directly with over 7000 young people providing life changing opportunities *Provided over 500 high quality work experience placements *Produced 18 award winning documentaries which have screened across the world from Trinidad to Toronto *Filmed and disseminated over 1500 educative videos and challenging programmes, viewed by over 4 million *Pioneered Citizen TV in the UK *Invented the ‘Readathon’ and ‘Views Box’ *Created numerous creative programme formats from ‘Don’t shout at the telly’ to ‘Books and buns’ to ‘Views on the streets’ *Toured the globe from the heart of the Amazon rain forest to Hiroshima to Buchenwald to the Narmada valley with groups of young learners *Hosted groups from Ghana, Uganda, Brazil, Japan, Germany and the USA *Reported back and arranged presentations in over 2000 universities, schools and colleges *Continued to support our peers and individual families in Ghana *Maintained a vibrant volunteer centre in East London for over 20 years with uniquely, an open door policy to all *Provided over 1000 references for volunteer-learners to advance their career prospects *Been selected as the exemplar of diversity in Community film making for the AHRC connected communities programme with our work showcased at the BFI, been selected as a Community Voices finalist for the Technology 4 Good awards; won Highly Commended in the prestigious Nominet Internet Awards in the category Empowering Young People and Citizens; was a medallist in the UK IT Industry Awards for the Community Project of the Year, was selected as a Rising Star by Idox and were the winner’s of the Children & Young People Now Arts & Culture Award 2018; *Provided a first paid experience for volunteers as camera crew with commissions from major institutions including Bloomberg, BESA, PET, BPAS and WISE. WORLDwrite’s film facilities and free training with our School of Citizen TV WORLDbytes, provides access to broadcast quality equipment and professional tuition that young individuals could never afford otherwise. Our programmes push boundaries and provide young volunteer learners with new skills and a chance to make an impact. Yet our films and programme making are not simply a learning opportunity for young beneficiaries but seek to expand public knowledge, challenge ideas, provide a platform for lesser-heard voices and to contribute to public debate. They have been screened in parliament, referred to by policy makers and institutions, used across universities and colleges, have been embedded in numerous magasines, newspapers and websites and been used as campaigning tools by many. Our Annual reports and accounts for the last six years are all available on the charity's website at www.worldwrite.org.uk
