Mission Statement
Discover encourages children develop a life-long love of stories including reading, writing & drawing. This matters because of the links to success in learning and communication, creative and imaginative development, an understanding of ourselves, others around us and the wider world, as well as being a source of pleasure. Success is many visitors from varied backgrounds, enjoying a range of activities, with proven impact on engagement with reading, writing, and story-telling and increased educational attainment through improving literacy and communication skills. Our Mission: We aspire to be an inspirational cultural resource, rooted in the borough of Newham, one of the UK’s most diverse areas and resonating through east London and beyond. We provide excellent artistic, creative, play and learning experiences for all children to support and develop their imagination, creativity, curiosity. We are committed to celebrating the artist in every child and promoting access to the arts for all children regardless of ability or socioeconomic status because we believe the arts are critical to child and youth development and to strong and vibrant communities.
About This Cause
Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford, east London, is an award-winning interactive literature venue providing creative, play and learning opportunities for over 100,000 children aged 0-11 years and their parents per year. Located in an area of low cultural engagement, high disadvantage and poor educational attainment, Discover contributes to long-term improvements in the life chances and quality of life for children. The Centre delivers an extensive community and education programme targeting vulnerable and disadvantaged children focusing on developing literacy through stories and children’s literature. Discover was opened in 2003 following consultation with local regeneration funders, educationalists, children and parents, to provide a safe place for children to play, read and learn. Over 140,000 people visited in 2018/19, including 19,633 school children. We provided over 9000 free visits for local residents and targeted groups and over 10,000 participated in events in the community.
