Mission Statement

Exposure is a multi-award-winning youth communications charity operating in north London giving young people a voice. We empower 15 to 25-year-olds from diverse and often challenging backgrounds to enjoy the benefits of volunteering. Young volunteers campaign for positive change on issues they are passionate about and in which they have lived experience, through exposure.org.uk and associated social media. Long-established partnerships ensure Exposure is able to reach those most marginalised. Exposure’s mission is to enable young people to thrive creatively, for the good of others, as well as themselves.

About This Cause

Overview Exposure has over two decades of experience supporting young volunteers to deliver impactful campaigns reaching hundreds of thousands of people. Young volunteers are recruited through local schools/colleges and charitable partners, as well as by existing young volunteers who recommend Exposure to their friends. Young volunteers are encouraged and nurtured to harness digital technology meaningfully, positively and intelligently, applying their knowledge, experiences, vitality and idealism in the service of others. They are guided and trained to produce compelling creative content – features, news stories, interviews, poetry, fiction, graphics, photographs, podcasts, music and short films – campaigning on issues they care about, before publishing online and disseminating via social media to move, inspire and motivate others. Young volunteers decide for themselves how they wish to contribute, and do so on their own terms, in their own time and at their own pace, to balance their various other commitments. Driven by the passions of its young volunteers, Exposure has developed comprehensive guidance and production tips to enable young people to campaign within the following broad subject areas: • Health & wellbeing matters • Our cherished environment • Safeguarding our community • Driving equality & inclusion • Elevating women’s rights • Boosting LGBTQI+ rights • Tackling racism, disablism and discrimination • Education & prospects for the future • Technology for good • Culture, sport & travel for all • Celebrating youth creativity • Valuing positive relationships Workshops Exposure delivers up to six communications workshops a week, lasting up to two hours each, in local schools/colleges, through other charitable partners and via additional blended one-to-one support using email, phone and videoconferencing, Adult communications experts deliver to small groups or on a one-to-one basis, navigating young volunteers through the following steps: 1. explore Exposure’s youth campaign activities, motivated by how previous young volunteers have contributed to their community, how they had fun while making a positive impact; 2. open up about issues they care about, revealing experiences, feelings, knowledge, ideas and solutions; 3. develop these personal responses into coherent, engaging digital creative content; 4. share their outputs widely on Exposure’s website, social media and through other professional media outlets to reach their peers, decision makers, online influencers and the wider community. Impact Young volunteers gain: • narrative therapy, helping themselves as they help others, breaking taboos, tackling stigma and in so doing improve their confidence, mental health, resilience and relationships; • access to specialist support with signposting and referral to local professionals who can intervene on specific health and wellbeing issues, and advise on culture, identity, community, climate change and human rights issues; • life-changing skills: communication, IT, teamwork, time keeping, planning, production/creative industry expertise and knowledge of interviewing, editing, writing, recording, photography, and image creation and manipulation; • an online creative portfolio, on a respected independent platform, demonstrating their worth and enhancing their CVs and prospects; • support, guidance and a fair reference when progressing into further/higher education, apprenticeships, other volunteering and employment, including specialist careers advice from a network of supportive Exposure alumni now working in the creative and associated industries; • opportunities for freelance work at Exposure, applying their skills and campaign expertise to spur and support newer cohorts of volunteers on commissioned projects. Outcomes annually Exposure involves at least 120 young volunteers in the production of at least 100 outputs for the Exposure website and social media, raising awareness and campaigning for positive change. Outputs reach many hundreds, if not thousands more young people through Exposure’s social media. Exposure has over 2,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram, mainly local young people as well as organisations interested in young people’s lives who often share to their followers. Exposure increases the engagement of at least 120 young volunteers annually who: • develop character and maturity undertaking meaningful volunteering and campaign work • improve relations with peers, adults and community groups • act as role models to inspire other young people • are better equipped to re-engage in education with clearer direction and more realistic goals, and secure university placements, apprenticeships and employment. At least 120 young volunteers demonstrate and report improved: • confidence, motivation and resilience to share feelings, cope with and overcome difficulties, look after themselves and manage transitions in their lives, by being of service to their peers and community; • life, writing, digital communications, teamwork and work based skills, enabling them to set and meet goals, develop professionalism, and formulate plans for their future education and career.
