Mission Statement
STAR (Student Action for Refugees) is the national network of students building a more understanding and just society where refugees are welcomed and can thrive in the UK.
About This Cause
People who arrive in the UK after fleeing war and persecution face many challenges in claiming their right to asylum and building new lives due to a hostile policy environment, negative media narrative and public attitudes, and limited access to services. STAR is creating a more understanding, just and welcoming society today and in the future by: empowering young people to be changemakers; learning and sharing information about asylum and the lived experience of refugees to shift the narrative; challenging the structural barriers that refugees and asylum seekers face when seeking protection and building a new life in the UK; campaigning, with a particular focus and expertise on delivering access to higher education; providing practical support and connecting communities through volunteering. Set up by students at Nottingham University in 1994, we are an inclusive network of UK students, students from refugee backgrounds and international students working together to make change. We have a small staff team who train and support the network and lead on national campaign and advocacy work. Last year we; had 44 STAR groups run by 291 student leaders with a membership of 2013; supported 1310 refugees in 78 community projects; held 489 online events to train & inform 8506 people about asylum and refugees; improved access to university for refugees by supporting 11 universities with scholarship development, training 192 staff & providing information to 527 current and prospective students; mobilised students to campaign for Equal Access to university, the right to work for asylum seekers, the right to family reunion, the closure of the barracks accommodation, an end to immigration detention & more.
