Mission Statement
Home-Start Camden & Islington is a grass-roots charity that supports and empowers parents with young children who are struggling to cope with everyday life. Our mission is to help disadvantaged or struggling parents with young children in Camden and Islington. We provide emotional and practical support to parents to improve their wellbeing and mental health and to prevent crises for the and their family.
About This Cause
HSC&I provides support to families in Camden and Islington who have a child under the age of five. Home-Start Camden and Islington provides practical and emotional support for disadvantaged parents with children under the age of five. Parents are referred to our service with a range of needs including, mental health conditions, needing support with isolation, their own or their child’s physical health condition or disability, temporary or inappropriate housing, or having experienced domestic abuse. The majority of families we support are in financial hardship or debt. Our support is targeted at the most disadvantaged families who are often isolated and unable to access other services. In our latest annual evaluation, 13% of parents we supported had experienced domestic abuse, 28% were in inappropriate housing, 38% of families had an adult or child with ill health/disability. Nearly all the parents we support have a mental health condition. 72% of beneficiaries are from BAME groups. We provide a home-visiting service offering a wide range of support to the parents who are referred to us. Parents are matched with a volunteer who provides one-to-one support for 3-4 hours per week. This support lasts for on average around six months, or longer if needed. Our volunteers are recruited from the local area and all have experience of parenting themselves, which facilitates a trusting and open relationship between the beneficiary and the volunteer. In 2019/20 we supported 175 families and 343 children, as well as working with 93 volunteers. We are proud to be a small charity with a big reach and a big impact. Parents who have received our support are less isolated, more confident, and better able to cope with everyday life. Children experience improvements in their mental, physical and social wellbeing and are ready to start school and succeed. Volunteers experience increased confidence, reduced isolation and are closer to the job market. The earliest years of a child's life make the biggest difference. That's why we make sure those year's count and no child's future is limited.
