Mission Statement

EJF's Mission is to protect people and the planet - we believe that environmental security is a human right. Our vision is a world where natural habitats and environments can sustain and be sustained by the communities that depend upon them for their basic needs and livelihoods. Our campaigns and programmes aim to strengthen the grassroots, amplify their voices and secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures.

About This Cause

EJF believes we all share a fundamental human right to a secure natural environment that delivers essential livelihood needs, including the food, water, clean air and shelter we depend on. Our lives and livelihoods are intrinsically tied to the health and well-being of our planet for today’s needs and a sustainable future. For over 20 years, we have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to a vision and approach to deliver impact for the natural world, our global climate and the human rights contingent upon a secure environment. Our work centers on our belief in equity, fairness and respect for communities most at risk of environmental injustice. EJF is determined to ensure that the most vulnerable, marginalised communities can secure and sustain the environment that underpins their human rights. Our work to secure environmental justice aims to empower grassroots communities. Our partnerships, training, and support help them to amplify their messages of concern and of hope for their local environment. Alongside, our film-led investigations and high-level global advocacy expose and help end threats to nature and associated human rights. Our work speaks truth to power, holding those who damage our world accountable and leveraging meaningful progress for our shared planet. How we work ● Investigations and filmmaking Our investigations and films expose threats to our natural world and grassroots communities. ● Global campaigns Our strategic advocacy brings together cutting-edge research, film and investigations that leverage changes to the architecture of environmental protection and governance. ● Grassroots empowerment We deliver vital support, training and equipment to environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples and investigative journalists in the Global South, helping amplify their voices to secure change. OUR PROGRAMMES Within EJF's overarching goal of environmental justice, our flagship campaigns focus on oceans, forests and climate and the protection of wetlands, 'blue carbon' and biodiversity. Through each, we bring investigations, grassroots action, and high-level strategies to leverage more robust governance, business due diligence, transparency and traceability in global supply chains that secure long-term protection for the environment and human rights. We aim to protect our global ocean and climate, forests and wetlands, wildlife and environmental defenders, and defend the human rights linked to a secure natural environment. 1. PROTECTING THE OCEAN ● Securing stronger ocean governance for an end to illegal fishing. We investigate and campaign for stronger ocean governance and transparent supply chains that deliver sustainable, legal fisheries. ● Building grassroots skills to defend the ocean ● Protecting the deep ocean from industrial mining ● Preventing marine plastic pollution 2. PRESERVING WETLANDS AND FORESTS ● Protecting critical biomes for nature, people and climate 3. SECURING CLIMATE JUSTICE ● Conserving nature’s carbon stores in our ocean, wetlands and forests ● Amplifying the voices of climate refugees 4. SUPPORTING ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS ● Enabling grassroots environmental activism and conservation leadership to thrive ● Building opportunities for investigative environmental journalism HOW WE WORK: WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE? We are driven by the truth and the need to challenge systems to secure meaningful action. We want to see change. We know how to make change happen. We are bold, informed risk-takers committed to protecting our natural world and empowering frontline communities in remote and challenging places. Our approach is multifaceted. We are intentionally nimble, allowing us to respond to new issues, opportunities and challenges. Our global team of community advocates, researchers and campaigners, investigators, filmmakers and media experts drives exemplary impact with innovative, demonstrably effective and durable strategies. Our work is guided by integrity and equity. We collaborate with all those who share our vision, supporting environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, local communities and independent journalists. The impacts of environmental degradation, from biodiversity loss to climate change, are felt most by the communities least responsible for causing that harm. We will continue to tell their stories and fight for a more secure, sustainable future.
