Mission Statement
The futures of far too many young people are determined by background and limited access to opportunities, not potential. Career Ready aims to improve outcomes for young people from lower income backgrounds so that their success as working adults is not limited by their socio-economic reality.
About This Cause
We are a UK-wide social mobility charity that links employers with schools to open up the world of work to young people aged 15/16-18, transforming their aspirations and life chances. We give students with potential from lower income families, and at risk of under performing and under attaining, the confidence, skills and knowledge to achieve their potential. Our high-impact 18 month programme sits alongside students’ studies and is delivered by employer volunteers, who provide one-to-one mentoring, a paid internship, masterclasses on key employability skills and workplace visits. Our young people get access to role models, real experience of the working world, opportunities and networks, fostering their ambitions and ability to compete on a level playing field for the best jobs and careers in the country. Career Ready students face the following disadvantages: • they are not upwardly socially mobile, lacking access to professional role models, networks and other opportunities that afford exposure to, and experience of, higher-level careers • Career Ready students could be the first in the family to go to university, if that is their post- school chosen pathway • they have a higher chance of being under-employed compared to their ‘wealthier peers’ • lack confidence and are less likely to aspire towards a professional career We have years of experience in leading a transformation in the way employers and schools work in partnership to prepare young people for the world of work. 98% of Career Ready students go onto a positive destination. 88% said their future aspirations have been raised and 98% said that their internship provided them with a valuable experience of work. 94% of students would recommend the programme to others (from a 74% response return) and for 90% of them, their mentor helped them to achieve their goals. Through Career Ready, employers and their employees get the chance to develop their own management skills and invest in the next generation of talented employees. The benefits to business are as recognised and valued as the impact on young people. 96% of mentors said that their skills had improved by the end of the programme. 20% of businesses who support us have recruited at least one student they met through Career Ready and 80% of organisationsstate they would employ a Career Ready student as a result of their experience.
