Mission Statement

Our education system is failing children in poor areas. Thousands of children unable to realise their potential. This doesn’t just harm young people, but the communities we live in. Teach First is an education charity committed to giving children facing the biggest barriers the chance to fulfil their potential. It backs the schools with the toughest challenges. The charity finds and trains teachers, develops school leadership teams and connect schools with networks of diverse expertise and opportunities to create real change. Since launching in 2003, the charity has now placed over 17,000 teachers and leaders, has more than 100 headteachers in its alumni, and has supported over two million pupils. As well as recruiting new teachers into the profession, the charity provides a range of support for schools, including programmes to help develop teachers at every stage of their career.

About This Cause

Great Teachers: There is a teacher recruitment and supply crisis across England. Schools in disadvantaged areas struggle to recruit the best talent. This means poorer pupils don’t have access to great teachers, often having supply teachers rather than a consistent one. We recruit trainee teachers, focusing on shortage subjects like science, maths and modern foreign languages. Each year we train roughly 1,500 teachers, placing them in the schools that need them most, giving all pupils the best start in life. Brilliant Leaders: Despite its importance, school leadership is one of the most lonely and stressful jobs in education. Many leaders lack the networks or support they need to thrive. Faced with so much pressure and minimal support, school leaders have been pushed to their limits, leading many to quit. Teach First provides professional development and support to teachers at every level of leadership, from Head of Subject to Head of School. Helping teachers progress in their careers keeps talent in schools, so more pupils can succeed. A Powerful movement: Teachers can feel isolated and unsupported, which means they leave the profession. Schools risks losing vital talent and experience. We support our network of teachers to share resources and grow with each other. Across the country, many of our networks meet regularly, supporting and upskilling each other, and providing a sense of community. We encourage those that have left the profession to use their voice to influence policy, driving change at a national level. Strong Policy: Policy plays a fundamental role in outcomes for schools and their pupils. Too often, schools serving the most deprived communities are overlooked. It is vital that we use our voice and networks to influence policy change to support these schools that need it most. We work to see long-term solutions embedded in our education system that have the potential to change lives. Get involved!
