Mission Statement
Kids for Kids is the only organisation providing sustainable projects helping children and families in the rural villages of Darfur, Sudan. Our aim is to transform children's lives long term through grassroots projects identified, and run, by the communities themselves. By empowering women to earn an income, often for the first time ever, we are helping families onto the first rung of the ladder out of poverty and transforming communities long term. We don't believe in charity, we believe in helping people to help themselves.
About This Cause
Kids for Kids is unique as it adopts entire villages in Darfur and introduces an integrated package of grassroots projects, identified and run by the communities themselves and with democratic election and training of volunteers and beneficiaries. Conditions in these remote communities are arguably the worst in the world. Because Darfur is isolated, politically, economically and geographically. foreigners are kept away and the international community has no vested interest in the region. Conflict, which started in 2002, still continues. Due to their extreme poverty, people have no means of helping themselves. Through our package of grassroots projects, Kids for Kids is lifting families out of abject poverty and giving them a chance. Our aim is to enable people to stay in their homes, to rebuild their lives and for their children to have a better future. Our key projects are the provision of clean water, and Goat loans. Water is key to survival and wherever possible we fund handpumps and submersible pumps, or find other means of enabling families to have better access to water, such as the provision of donkey-pulled water carts and jerry cans. Our Goat Loan of five pregnant nanny goats provides the poorest families with milk for malnourished children to drink, often their only source of protein, and the growing flock gives mothers an income for the first time in their lives, as they sell milk and yoghurt at market. Every two years, five goats are passed on to benefit a new family in the village. We train committees to ensure the success of our Goat Loan, which benefits new families every two years in the 110 Kids for Kids villages. To date we have transformed the lives of over 590,000 people. Our additional projects include providing donkeys to carry heavy loads, blankets (to keep children warm at night and lower the risk of chest infections), mosquito nets (cutting the incidence of malaria down by two thirds), donkey ploughs and farm tools. We also provide chickens for the elderly who would not be able to care for goats. There is no health care in the villages for either humans or animals. We train village midwives, first aid workers and paravets and we build simple and permanent health units and veterinary centres. 98% of women are illiterate in the villages. Mothers have been begging us to build Kindergartens as they know education is a key route out of poverty for their children. So far we have fourteen Kindergartens in total. The training we give communities ensures the democratic election of beneficiaries and volunteers and the accountability of those involved. It is the combination of basic assets, and our philosophy of ensuring volunteers and beneficiaries are answerable to their own communities, which enables the longevity of our help. Our team members in Darfur visit our villages regularly to check on our projects and speak with the beneficiaries about successes and failures. This allows us to adapt our projects to what works well. Each year there is a community annual review in all our villages so that everyone’s voice is heard. We will never adopt a new village without ensuring we can commit to providing all of our basic sustainable projects. With your help we could bring hope and real change to hundreds more people.
