Mission Statement
Putting healthy rivers at the heart of communities
About This Cause
Thames21 is a leading environmental charity, working across London and the Thames Basin to deliver nature-based, community-focused solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises. We achieve this through river restoration and landscape regeneration projects at scale, whilst also delivering targeted community outreach and engagement programmes, as well as training citizen scientists to monitor and map the health of the Thames. By connecting communities with their local blue-green spaces and fostering their closer relationships with rivers and nature, Thames21 aims to inspire long-term stewardship and build climate and community resilience. Led by a senior management team of environmental, commercial, and operational specialists, we are experts in monitoring, evaluating, designing, and delivering cost-effective interventions and programmes. Thames21’s Catchment Based Approach creates strong working relationships across all sectors – public, private and NGO - to deliver on impacts. Our combination of connection and expertise enables us to deliver on our commitments to all stakeholders with an established and level-headed agility. We also deliver bespoke employee engagement activities along the Thames and its tributaries, including: - Planting wetlands and woodlands to reduce flood risk and store carbon - Removing invasive species to improve biodiversity and create habitat for wildlife - Reconnecting rivers to floodplains by removing toeboards - Improving access to rivers and their health by clearing scrub - Pulling tonnes of plastic and wet wipes out of rivers before they are swept out to the ocean and contribute to the risk of ecosystem collapse Initially established as a research project in 1994, Thames21 became an independent registered charity in 2004.
