Mission Statement
FOWW’s overarching aim is to enrich the lives of every child at West Wimbledon Primary School.
About This Cause
West Wimbledon Primary School (WWPS) is a two-form entry, community primary school and is a happy, inclusive and successful school. The school has 550 children from the ages of 3-11 years of age. We draw pupils from many different backgrounds, faiths and communities and we are fortunate that we have an Autism Base, called Treetops that welcomes children from the full spectrum range, which further enriches the diversity of our contented group of children. The Autism Resource Provision is only one of 3 units in Merton that specialises in the education of primary school aged children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Being an urban school brings with it challenges, and our school is sited beneath the A298 main road where the flyover is literally towering over the playground. This makes our current outdoor useable space very daunting for many of our children with special educational needs. The national average of pupils with a statement of special educational needs (SEN) or education, health and care (EHC) is 2.9% and at WWPS this is more than double at 6.1%. The teaching style needs to be adaptive and interactive using both indoor and outdoor learning spaces. The plot that the school was originally built on wasn’t designed to accommodate the number of pupils that it currently has, and the senior leadership team of the school and the governors have had to be creative with the space available to them. Our charity, the Friends of West Wimbledon (FOWW) is run by the parents and supported by the teachers, other staff and governors of WWPS. Along with running Christmas and Summer fairs, we’ve created Community Days at the weekends, where we have marshalled parents and others to help fix, paint, clean and clear the outside areas of the school – making usable as much of the outdoor space as we can. We have events throughout the year that are all designed to raise funds and enhance collaboration with the local community. The FOWW community is working as hard as we can to raise funds over the months ahead to bring to life the outdoor areas of the school.
