Mission Statement
The Fawcett Society is the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights at work, at home and in public life. Our vision is a society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfill their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future for us all.
About This Cause
Fawcett fights sexism and gender inequality through hard-hitting research and national campaigning that addresses the most urgent issues affecting women and girls in the UK today. We achieve this by: - Providing the facts and evidence with our compelling research so we can educate and lead the debate. - Convening stakeholders such as frontline organisations, politicians, academics, grassroots activists and wider UK society to develop practical solutions. - Campaigning for change with our members, partners and allies. With our members and supporters, we are working to turn the tide on the gender pay gap, fight for equal power and representation, end harmful gender stereotypes, and defend women's rights. We are delivering ground-breaking research and campaigning for change with our projects on: - Closing the Pay Gap: We continue to fight to make equal pay a reality for all women in the UK. We are campaigning to change the law to include ethnicity pay gap reporting, ending salary history questions on job applications and ensuring the right to know what your male counterpart is earning. We are fighting to change the intersecting oppressions and systemic disadvantages that Black and minoritised women experience in the workplace and developing proactive solutions for employers and Government. - Power and Representation: Our Sex and Power 2022 report shows that women remain woefully underrepresented in positions of power across the UK, from the boardroom to Parliament. We want to understand and break down the barriers that hold women back from achieving their full potential, and secure equal representation for women. - Ending Harmful Gender Stereotypes: Our research shows that gender stereotypes harm girls and boys. Educators want to tackle them, and parents want schools and companies to change. We worked with Ofsted to change their Early Years handbook that now requires challenging stereotypes as part of school and nursery inspections, the Department of Education to change their curriculum for Early Years education and companies to improve their advertising and editorial polices. We are currently running our Equal Play campaign, supporting parents and caregivers in challenging stereotypes in their families. - Defending Women's Rights: Our hard-won rights are at risk and Fawcett is striving to defend them, from the fight to decriminalise abortion to calling out our police forces for institutional sexism and racism to striving to put an end to misogyny in the media. We react to key moments for women and ensure what we need is top of the agenda. We have a significant impact from our extensive media and social media reach to raise public awareness, to our knowledge and relationships with political stakeholders meaning we can influence policy and the law. This is only possible with the backing of likeminded supporters who want change for women too!
