Mission Statement
Founded in 1973, Home-Start is renowned as one of the leading family support charities in the UK and serves 71% of all local authority areas. Through a network of almost 200 locally rooted Home-Starts we visit families with young children in their homes and lead supportive groups to transform the life chances of some of the most socially excluded children and families in the country. At the heart of all Home-Starts are highly trained and compassionate volunteers who have often been in similar situations to those they support. During 2019 alone 13,500 volunteers gave over 233,000 hours of their time to support over 35,000 families with 59,000 children.
About This Cause
Home-Start is a local community network of trained volunteers and expert support helping families with young children through their challenging times. We are there for parents when they need us the most because childhood can’t wait. We work in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations locally to help build better lives for children tackling a vast range of issues such as domestic abuse, isolation, homelessness, domestic violence, disability, mental health problems and severe financial hardship. These issues can have a huge impact on the well-being and development of children. We are there for as long as it takes to put a family back on its feet and give children the best start possible. Home-Start works because our volunteers are parents. They understand how hard it can be. They work alongside parents, in their own homes, to help them cope with the stresses and strains of life and make sure they have the skills, time and strength they need to nurture their children. Our volunteers visit the family’s home for every week. Volunteers are very committed and will keep visiting until the parents feel they can stand on their own two feet. Parents and volunteers often develop a deeply trusting relationship which can lead to powerful change within the family. Home- Start believe children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play the key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them achieve their full potential.
