Mission Statement

The PRA is a prison based charity passionate about using radio to improve the lives of vulnerable people in custody and to help the long term rehabilitation of people in prison.

About This Cause

We are the Prison Radio Association - the national charity that uses radio and podcasts to support people who have been to prison across England and Wales. We run National Prison Radio (NPR); the world's first national radio station for people in prison, launched in 2009. Made by prisoners, for prisoners, National Prison Radio provides: • Reliable, clear signposting to opportunities, resources, and services for people in prison • A sense of positive community • Opportunities to gain new skills and find pathways within the creative sector and beyond • Rehabilitative audio content which supports people to improve their wellbeing and future prospects Our radio station reaches 80,000 people behind bars across England and Wales and broadcasts into prison cells 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 100% of people in prison across England and Wales know about NPR, 88% listen to NPR with 42% tuning in every single day; NPR has become a central part of prison life. The radio programmes we produce all target the key factors linked to reducing people’s likelihood of reoffending. We work alongside male prisoners at HMP Brixton and female prisoners at HMPYOI Styal to create the radio content while helping them to build skills and confidence; increasing their chances of accessing meaningful employment and education opportunities beyond the gate. Alongside this work we also provide support to people post-release. We focus on developing production and presenting talent, supporting people who have worked with us on the radio station to keep professionally developing outside the gate while accessing opportunities to gain paid work in radio and production. In addition, we produce a podcast series called Life After Prison. This series, made by ex-prisoners for ex-prisoners, is for anyone who has spent time in prison or is close to someone who has. Through this podcast we continue supporting people once they have served their sentence; giving them hope and inspiration as well as access to the resources, the knowledge and the opportunities that will help them to stay out of prison. In a nutshell, we work alongside prisoners and ex-prisoners to produce and broadcast radio in prisons, so marginalised people serving a sentence can access support, advice and opportunities that will ultimately ensure brighter futures for them and their families.
