Mission Statement
Action for Refugees in Lewisham supports refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to lift themselves out of poverty and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community.
About This Cause
Action for Refugees in Lewisham is a small and vibrant local charity that improves the lives of refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in South East London. We support people to lift themselves out of poverty and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community. We are a team of 14 mostly part time staff, our projects are developed and delivered together with our community. AFRIL provides both crisis support to meet immediate need, and longer-term, flexible programmes to tackle the underlying problems that lead families to be in crisis, through the following core services: Rainbow Club Saturday School - improving educational attainment, wellbeing, confidence and self esteem, and raising the aspirations of disadvantaged children (NRCSE Quality Mark). Advice Service - advice, complex casework and legal interventions in housing and homelessness, welfare rights, community care, asylum support, access to healthcare and related matters. (Advice Quality Standard accredited). Helping Hands Food Bank Programme - supporting families to overcome extreme food poverty through regular food vouchers, fresh culturally appropriate food, toiletries, nappies, and essential household items. Allotment of Refuge - an integrated community of refugee and local volunteers with a focus on sustainable food growing and environmental protection, providing fresh produce to our foodbank. Immigration Partnership with Southwark Law Centre providing free legal representation to AFRIL families for whom it is not safe to return to their home countries to regularise their immigration status in the UK.
