Mission Statement
To improve the lives of mothers and families affected by pre- and post-natal depression and anxiety.
About This Cause
Acacia is the only West Midlands charity providing free, community-based, volunteer-led support to mothers/families affected by pre/postnatal depression. Our mission: Improve the lives of mothers and families affected by pre- and post- natal depression and anxiety. We provide face-to-face and virtual support: • Telephone and online support via a virtual services team • 1:1 Weekly peer-support sessions at 3 community-based centres with free creche/refreshments • 12-week CBT group work course • Helping Hands at Home for those overwhelmed by the practicalities of parenting including a ‘holding the baby’ service to reduce isolation in the home • Acacia Dads: for those affected by their own/partner’s depression • Care packages including a new Winter Gift • Specialist support for Young Parents and mothers from BAME communities Pre/postnatal depression symptoms include persistent anxiety and fatigue as well as a loss of interest and enjoyment in activities and baby, uncontrollable worries, or obsessive thoughts. Left untreated they have profound effects on relationships, families, and children. Over 3,500 women in Birmingham suffer each year, but only 10% with the most severe issues receive specialist NHS support. Over half our beneficiaries live in the top 25% most deprived wards. Our compassionate peer support and central ethos of kindness ensure that over 500 of these vulnerable women improve their mental health. Our latest evaluation shows this works: • 84% have reduced depression • 82% report reduced anxiety • 94% of volunteers felt that they were making a valuable contribution to society • 88% of volunteers felt a greater sense of community The mother/baby bond is strengthened and women reconnect with family, friends and community. In addition many are helped to access training, volunteering or employment.
