Mission Statement

Street Child believes that every child deserves to be safe, in school and learning - especially in low resource environments and emergencies. Since 2008, we have reached over one million children in low resource environments and emergencies with services such as direct access to education and mental health provision; 157,000 adults through programmes such as the family business scheme, education classes and teacher training; 3,000 classrooms have been supported either through construction or renovation to improve learning environments. We are experts in education, economic empowerment and protection programming. Our interventions are integrated to confront challenges, assuring safety as we afford access to schooling. We seek out situations where there are gaps between aid, assistance and need and, as such, are often one of the only organisations supporting children in these tough circumstances. We prioritise children in the most marginalised populations and currently work in over 20 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Middle East and Europe. By coupling instantaneous change for children with an increase in the capacities of caregivers, communities and schools we support children to be safe, in school and learning in the long term.

About This Cause

Street Child works with the most disadvantaged children in some of the most challenging contexts in the world, where others cannot or will not operate: in Boko-Haram affected north east Nigeria, rural and upland Nepal, remote and incredibly poor Sierra Leone, and Ebola-affected Liberia. We are able to provide accessible and quality education by emphasising the quality of our work and responding appropriately to the context. By doing this we are able to help children who would otherwise never be reached. We support the development and growth of our local partners and support them to seek out and scale locally-rooted initiatives that are highly effective. Rather than supporting from an HQ in London, our programmes team are embedded in the organisations we support, ensuring we deliver immediate and sustained improvements for our partners and their projects. Our relative youth and continued expansion has developed a flexibility and speed that can be lost in more established and larger organisations. Each situation is examined as if new and responded to accordingly. It is this approach which has allowed us to deliver highly impactful humanitarian projects on scale and has attracted the support of UNICEF, DFID and national governments who recognise our ability to reach the most disadvantaged, effectively and efficiently. Through our pragmatic approach to each situation we identify the response that will create the greatest change to the largest number of children. In contrast to many this almost always means we apply the principles of sustainability we have learnt over the past 10 years – even in emergency situations we prioritise investment in human capital. We deliver projects which have long-term education improvement at the centre, are low cost and easily implemented.
