Camara Education provides sustainable IT equipment, training and resources to educate young people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.
About This Cause
Camara Education sets up computer labs in schools in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia and trains teachers and local staff to use and maintain them. We also create locally relevant content for students and teachers. We achieve this in part by working with companies to recycle surplus or end-of-life computers and other IT equipment. Camara exists because we believe the world would be a better place if all young people were empowered through innovative education to create the life they want to lead. Founded in 2005 in Dublin, Ireland, Camara has built a proven model of education deliver’ that is both sustainable and highly scalable. We operate four Education Hubs in Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania). The Hubs operate as social enterprises and seek to serve local market needs through a sustainable business model. Since 2005, Camara Education Limited (CEL) has enabled over 4 million young people to achieve better educational outcomes and thus improve their life opportunities. Whilst Camara initially focused primarily on the provision of ICT hardware to schools, our experience and review of impact has progressed our focus so that our hubs now offer a holistic package of products and services aimed at progressing schools through a journey of integrating ICT to improve measured educational outcomes. This includes contextually appropriate training for teachers, quality educational resources that aim to support curriculum, technical and e-waste support for technology and a focus on empowering school and sector leadership to manage change in the school with ICT. Camara’s model allows our local education hubs to evolve in response to the schools and the sector’s needs in the countries where they operate. Camara has a strong reputation for sectoral knowledge in ICT in Education and the ability to deliver results in challenging circumstances. In order to ensure the equipment we put into school reaches its maximum potential and benefits as many students as possible, Camara promotes the regular maintenance of the computers. In addition to this, Camara Education strives to become an innovative leader in e-waste management by creating a closed loop system for all e-waste generated through our projects. We have therefore partnered with licensed local partners to ensure proper disposal of all our computers when they finally reach their end of life.
