Mission Statement

Supporting the homeless and vulnerable in our communities

About This Cause

Who we are: Fast 58 are a small energetic charity, made up entirely of volunteers dedicated to supporting the homeless, the vulnerable and the most in need in our London local community and on the streets. Officially registered as a charity in September 2010 although our trustees were already deeply involved in homeless outreach work, which our founders had previously begun in 1991. What we do: The pandemic and initial lockdown brought to our attention the presence of a high number of housed but vulnerable individuals in the local community consisting of the elderly, families on low income, families with no recourse to public funds and individuals with mental health and or health issues. Reaching out to local people impacted by the pandemic became an important part of what FAST 58 was able to do. We quickly discovered that most low income families could have been 1 meal away from being homeless especially as universal credit claims were backlogged for weeks. We also provide assistance to families living nearby housed by the Home Office in a local hotel with no benefits to claim whilst they are following the asylum seeker claim process. In Summer 2020 we built a strong community reputation which led to running a 6-week summer fun and food project supported with funds by the Mayor of London’s office through Southwark Council. We delivered indoor and outdoor social activities for children, and respite for parents, together with food provision to last for a week to ensure no child went without a hot meal at least once per day. We have continued to deliver social activities and the provision of grocery packs during 2021, Easter, Summer and Christmas academic term breaks. Supporting financial constraints and mental health well-being for all age groups and vulnerabilities. Forward View: We aim to continue the community based work by remaining focused on our three strands that cover the Elderly, Youth and Families. For instance, 1) Address the impact of social isolation, vulnerabilities, lack of nutrition, and surviving the winters for the elderly in our communities. 2) Address the impact that COVID-19 has had on the education for our young people from their social skills to their core academic skills. 3) Address the impact of COVID-19 and the pressures of low income or no income families, overcrowding, family disagreements, social exclusion. We aim to continue running daily fun activities for children on school term holidays living on local housing estates with educational classes/fun and games as well as providing a hot daily meal which in turn assists parents/carers already under financial strain. The ambition of these project will address education needs, mental health and well-being. We aim to continue to provide groceries and weekly food packs for the elderly and vulnerable in the community as the impact of the energy fuel prices will lead people having to make difficult choices between paying bills and eating a well balanced diet. This will in turn will lead to a host of other implications including poor health, obesity, stress and in some cases can and will trigger peer pressure that can increase crime rather than decrease it. How you can help We need your help to continue the work that is already underway, to ensure everyone is given a balanced lifestyle, that our young people are given the opportunities to thrive in their education and career choices, that our most vulnerable receive the support they need to help improve their health and life outcomes and that families are assisted to improve their employment opportunities through education and well balanced informative choices offered to them.
