Mission Statement

Maslaha seeks to change and challenge the conditions that create inequalities for Muslim communities in areas such as education, gender, criminal justice, health, negative media coverage and a continued climate of Islamophobia and racism. We understand deeply how this context can leave individuals and communities suffering and unable to realise their full potential. Our work is practical and rooted in local communities but with a reach that is national and international, and with a view to influencing policy and the public imagination. We recognise and rely on the knowledge and expertise that exists in the communities that we work with and the power this has to create change across society. Maslaha has a range of projects in areas including education, gender, criminal justice and health. Maslaha's range of projects means we understand the multiple identities communities hold, and the multiple deprivations that can exist. We initiate and create spaces for people to contribute, shape and give a voice to their ideas and actions. This is an integral part of our work, our process, and enables new perspectives and interventions to be created.

About This Cause

Maslaha is an award winning charity with over ten years of practice working collaboratively with Muslim and other marginalised communities to tackle long-standing inequalities in health, education, criminal justice and gender. We take a multi-layered and creative approach to improve services and influence practice, policy and public imagination. Our work is always rooted in locality but is used nationally and internationally. In 2012, Maslaha was named one of Britain’s 50 New Radicals by NESTA and the Observer newspaper, an initiative to find examples of inspirational social pioneers. In 2014 Maslaha’s work in mental health was announced overall winner of the global Innovation Mindset Challenge, a competition run by Project Innovation in New York and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and Columbia University.
