EMMANUEL GROUP OF CHURCHES

Northampton, England, NN3 8JR United Kingdom

Mission Statement

The Emmanuel Group of Churches represent a mixed expression of the Christian faith and includes Anglicans, Methodists, Baptists, Free Church and those of little and sometimes of no faith at all. Our welcome is extended to the whole community and that includes every-one, no-one is turned away. We recognise that each individual is unique and has a right to receive respect and their voice to be heard regardless of their social position, ethnic origin, ability or disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or belief system. Purpose and Aims The over- arching principles which govern our activities fall into the following three categories: 1. To provide a safe and comfortable environment where individuals of all ages and abilities can come together to worship God and to pray for each other and our community. 2. To encourage and enable individuals to grow in their faith through teaching programmes, pastoral care and providing opportunities to serve the local neighbourhood. 3. To reach out to our community, providing care, compassion and support in meeting the immediate needs of groups and individuals as well as engaging in longer term social, health and financial well-being actions.

About This Cause

The group originated at the Emmanuel Church and has grown over the last 40 years along-side the development of this part of Northampton. While many within the group congregations are aligned to the Anglican, Baptist and Methodist streams there are also a large proportion of non-affiliated church members. This gives rise to a special situation encouraging diversity and acceptance of different views, a tolerance and belief that everybody counts equally. The group is proud of having a long tradition of community outreach and is actively involved in programmes, independently and in collaboration with others, which support the local population. Programmes include a Food Bank, a Café, a Community Support Worker, a Young Families Worker, a Children & Youth Worker and support to local schools and residential care homes. Northampton East can generally be considered as an area of Social and Economic Deprivation. The 2019 Government published indices confirms that over 50% of the population are classified within the lower quartile of national deprivation. The specific area of Blackthorn which covers a large area of the district sits within the lowest 1% in the country. Weston Favell Centre Food Bank is a collaborative project between Emmanuel Group of Churches, St Peter’s Weston Favell, and Storehouse Church. The three churches started working together to run a food bank in 2012 when it was recognised that there was a need to provide people who had lost their income for one reason or another, and were unable to provide food for themselves. Our belief, as a Christian church, is that God expects us to help them. We offer more than food. Many people can be supported by finding them other services which will help them to become self-sufficient again – what we think of as signposting. Everyone who comes to the food bank is offered the opportunity of a friendly chat and something to eat and drink – some people haven’t spoken to anyone for several weeks – a friendly face is priceless. We aim to give people a hand up, rather than just handouts, and so our food bank team works closely with our community support worker to help clients tackle debt and find jobs, to exit poverty long-term.
