Mission Statement
The Manta Trust’s mission is to conserve manta rays, their relatives, and their marine habitats, through a combination of research, education and collaboration.
About This Cause
Manta rays are beautiful, fascinating and enigmatic creatures; adapted to a life of perpetual motion, they range throughout the tropical and sub-tropical oceans of the world, their daily and seasonal movements tuned to the ebb and flow of the currents that bear their planktonic prey. Some individuals reach colossal proportions of up to seven metres in width. These gentle giants have the largest brain of any fish and their intelligence, curiosity and complex social interactions inspire thousands of divers and snorkelers to travel the world each year, seeking out encounters with them. Despite their brains and beauty, mantas have only been scientifically studied for around a decade, so much of their life history remains a mystery. Devil rays, their smaller cousins, are extremely shy and difficult to observe in the wild so even less is known about them. Manta and devil rays are threatened by overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, irresponsible tourism and the effects of climate change. As a result, mantas and some devil rays are listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. The Manta Trust has a vision of a sustainable future for the oceans, where manta rays and their relatives thrive in healthy, diverse, marine ecosystems. Our unique, multifaceted conservation approach has set us apart from others in the field of shark and ray conservation. Our team is comprised of a diverse group of researchers, scientists, conservationists, educators and media experts; working together to share and promote knowledge and expertise. By conducting long-term, robust scientific studies into manta and devil ray populations around the world, we aim to build the solid foundations upon which governments, NGO’s and conservationists can make informed and effective decisions to ensure the long-term survival of these animals.
