About This Cause
Spectrum WASP (We Are Special People) is a Children`s Charity supporting Local Children and Young People on the Autistic Spectrum with Disabilities, Special and Additional needs. We also support the Siblings and Families living within Rainworth, Blidworth, Mansfield and the surrounding areas of Nottinghamshire. The fundamental aim of establishing the Spectrum WASP Children`s Charity within our Local Community, is to support the development and skills of Children and Young People, to improve their quality of life and help them to gain acceptance into today’s demanding society. We provide Support for Parents and Carers through a comprehensive training programme that supports caring for their Children, and Young People, who frequently demonstrate incredibly challenging behaviour at times. The group was formed in 2009, and in 2010 became a Charity with its own Steering Committee, that consists of Parents, Carers and Volunteers. The Steering Committee and additional Volunteers have invested a lot of time attending Training sessions organised by the group, for us to become self-sufficient in both supporting the delivery of the Activities Life skills programme and the administration for the Charity. Through working in partnership with Adult Learning Colleges, Children’s Centres, and other additional Providers, we have succeeded in getting this training for our Charity, which has been a significant boost for our Parents and Carers to help build and aid their Confidence and Self-esteem. This Training consists of Paediatric First Aid, Safeguarding, Makaton, Food Hygiene, IT, Numeracy, Accounts, Literacy and Health and Safety. Over the last 13 years, we have supported more than 450 Children, Young People and Siblings within our Charity, our numbers are growing constantly year by year. Spectrum WASP is one of the most Popular and Well-Respected Groups in Nottinghamshire, with its outstanding reputation for Supporting Children, Young People, Siblings, Parents and Carers. We take referrals from Consultations at the Kings Mill Hospital, Nottingham City Hospital, Social Workers and Local GPs which also refer Children and Young People to our group. Over the last 10 years we have been taking our Children, Young People, Siblings, and their Families on Residential breaks. This has been a life changing experience for some of them. Some of our Families are quite Disadvantaged, have no outside Support and have never experienced a Family Holiday, in most cases, the Challenging Behaviour of these Children and Young People make it incredibly stressful for Parents/Carers to taken them on holiday, because they live by routine and any changes to this routine can have a detrimental effect on their behaviour. Jeni Dubock our Short Breaks Manager works to run, manage, and develop the non-profit Shorts Breaks Tender. Short Breaks helps support Families through Spectrum WASP by providing Respite Care for Local Children and Young People. We have also provided employment in our local area for 12 quality Support Workers to work alongside our Children in Respite care. Our term time Monthly Agenda of Activities, Workshops, Programmes and Events are organised by Group Co-ordinator, Sue Edwards. Our Monthly Activities include Swimming, Football, Coffee Mornings, Teen Club, Sailing and Wall Climbing, also Life Skills Workshops for Parents and Carers. We have also expanded our events programme in line with requests from our Children and Young People, to incorporate Teens Club, an early evening session, every Friday evening for 2 hours, for 11 to 18 year olds, which includes Creative Arts and Music through Learning and Life Skills along with Fun Activities. On the last Friday of the Month, we do an Out/About session in our local area, where our Young People have experienced activities such as bowling, pottery painting, pool and pizza night, restaurants, and Laser Tag. These sessions also encourage social engagement and help friendships to form. They are again supported by Parent/Carer Volunteers making it a safe place to be. Throughout the year during school holidays, we provide a full programme of events and activities, family days out, weekend activities and residential breaks. The school holiday programme includes residential breaks, a film club, arts and craft sessions, themed discos, music therapy sessions, horse riding, sailing, wall climbing, bike riding, walking, swimming, trampolining and various other activities. To ensure we sustain and carry on developing our Spectrum WASP group long term, we invest a lot of time and effort in applying for funding and fund raising. Fund raising is organised and carried out by Sue Edwards and Jeni Dubock, the Steering Committee, Families and Volunteers. Various fund-raising events are planned each month from Supermarket Bag Packing to Fashion Shows and sponsored bike rides etc... We also collect monthly Recycling and hold Raffles throughout the year. We also hold an Annual Awareness Day on the first Saturday in December in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre in Mansfield, giving an insight into the work we carry out and the support we can give within the local community. We strive to keep up with the hard work and dedication needed to help our Charity Spectrum WASP provide ongoing support for our wonderful Children, Young People, Siblings and Families. Our Care and Passion for this to continue means so much to us and is our Inspiration for future growth and development. Through partnership working and help with funding we can develop and maintain community working. “Without you there would be NO us”.
