Mission Statement

TalentEd brings retired teachers and disadvantaged young people together in small groups to improve grades and future options.

About This Cause

TalentEd offers high-ability students from poor backgrounds a year-long programme of weekly small group (1:6) sessions. Our qualified, retired teachers and inspirational role models improve GCSE grades and academic and career options. Last year we doubled the number of A and A* grades and increased confidence by 93%. Every young person should have the support, skills and aspirations to realise their potential. Sadly, this is not the case for young people from low income areas in the UK and educational inequality is highest amongst the brightest students. Highly able pupils from low income homes are over twice as likely as their wealthier classmates to fall behind by the age of 16 (Sutton Trust, 2015). We know that qualified retired teachers, working in small groups, changes the lives of the most disadvantaged young people and we are expanding rapidly in order to help many more. “I'm more confident and now looking forward to getting a job.” George, Bishop of Rochester Academy “You will feel like you are ahead of all your other classmates when it comes to jobs, university and interviews. Which is a seriously crucial part of your life!” Sara, Fulham Cross Girls’ School "I have learned to interact better with others and have looked at possible courses for professional routes." Lim, Fulham College Boys’ School “I have achieved being confident in myself and developing great leadership and teamwork skills.” Hafsah, Ark Elvin Academy “I was able to take what I learnt from TalentEd into my school work which has improved. I also learnt not to give up.” Lana, Ark Elvin Academy "I feel enriched by life-long learning for all involved." Ivan, TalentEd Tutor “TalentEd tutors support those pupils sitting comfortably on Bs who could do even better with additional intervention, support, guidance and resilience - all those things you need to become an A* student” Annabel Bates, Principal Ark Elvin Academy “TalentEd’s retired teachers have stretched, challenged and supported our brightest students over an excellent year. They have positively impacted academic work and aspirations and have greatly helped with reducing stress and increasing confidence. We were also delighted that one group of students won the ‘I am Creative’ final. Helenswood is looking forward to seeing further progress working with TalentEd again next year.” Lucy Monk, Principal, Helenswood Academy, Hastings
