Mission Statement
To advance the education of underprivileged children and young people in Nairobi, Kenya and the surrounding area by providing and assisting in the provision of fees, feeding programmes and facilities for education in schools.
About This Cause
The Giraffe Project was set up to enable children and young adults from the slums in and around Nairobi to access education. This is done through individual sponsorship which covers school/course fees and related costs. The charity has been sponsoring students for almost 20 years and currently supports around 400 students in Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Universities or Colleges. Donors can elect to sponsor a specific child, in which case we facilitate communication between sponsor and student, or contribute to a Bursary Fund from which students are sponsored by the charity. Sponsorship is offered purely on the basis of financial need and the availability of a school or college to meet the educational needs of the student. There is no gender, ethnic or religious criterion for sponsorship eligibility. Our coordinators in Kenya work through the application process with sponsorship candidates and their families, and check regularly on the progress and welfare of those on the programme. In addition to the sponsorship programme, the charity also works with partner schools operating in the slums to provide resources and improve facilities. Giraffe Project grants have, over the years, financed new school buildings; built science labs; provided computers, text books and libraries; and improved sanitation and drinking water in partner schools where our sponsored students receive their education. Students of secondary age typically move on to government schools outside the slum areas where they board during term time. These schools do not receive Giraffe Project grants.
