Mission Statement
We reduce the devastating long-term mental, physical, and social health consequences that homelessness can have on young people, and help them get back on their feet.
About This Cause
What we do: The Running Charity delivers high-quality wellbeing and youthwork support to young people aged 16-25, who are affected by homelessness and multiple or complex needs. We provide our programmes at no cost to any of the organisations or young people we work with. Sessions are inclusive, diverse and available throughout the week. We offer practical development support alongside wellbeing activities. Our programme supports young people through some of life’s most challenging obstacles, providing community, key work support, access to therapy, and personal development coaching. Interactions are aimed at enhancing an individuals’ toolkit to cope better with the immense adversities they face. We help young people who have had difficult pasts to get back on their feet, using a goal-setting reward system to develop the habit of achieving. We build consistent, trusted relationships and empower young people to make positive decisions about the direction of their future. The Charity engages with young people by partnering with services that work with individuals who are experiencing homelessness, such as hostels and day centres. We also work with services who support young people who are at greater risk of homelessness such as LGBTQ+ health provision, care leavers, youth offending services, and refugee and asylum seeker services. Our Theory of Change looks to progress a young person from dependence to independence, isolation to community and from social disengagement to active engagement. IMPACT LAST YEAR (Jan-Dec 2024): • 444 young people engaged with the service • Average age was 21 years old • 96% of members improved their mental health (by an average of 62%) • 99% improved (49%) or sustained (50%) their housing status • 91% report their mental health needs are now more manageable or have less impact on a day-to-day basis • 81% of members found employment or went back to school Homelessness can happen at any time and to anyone. When it happens to a young person it can affect them for the rest of their life. At least 103,000 young people in the UK are homeless right now and homeless young people are almost twice as likely to die as their non-homeless peers. Together we can make a difference.
