Mission Statement

Odd Eyes Theatre opens up communication and generates conversations between individuals from diverse cultures, social backgrounds, age groups and walks of life. Through performance, film, creative journeys and learning opportunities we take audiences, artists and people from a range of different communities on journeys that reflect the lives of real people, into known and unknown cultures, traditions and beliefs. We create exchange, break barriers and celebrate diversity. By sharing these stories with passion and empathy, we show reality from different perspective and inspire change. We encourage people to explore life with curiosity. We see diverse perspectives and relationships and time and again we see the need to break down the barrier of “us” and “them”. At Odd Eyes Theatre we connect, we communicate and we grow.

About This Cause

Odd Eyes Theatre nurtures beauty in diversity. Our stories reflect on current events, denouncing social-inequality and highlighting civic responsibility. Our work blends realism with traditional and experimental forms, using audience participation and mixed media. Our professional productions take inspiration from the creative exchange with the communities we interact with. In return, we share our practice through participatory programmes to inspire change. Our flagship programme, Creative Debate, started in 2015 and has since engaged with over 10,000 people, prompting conversations through debate and storytelling either in film or theatre format.Using theatre and film to spark conversations, Creative Debate equips participants with the tools to self-advocate and explore complex themes in view of creating real change in their communities. The technique was developed by Emilia Teglia, founder of Odd Eyes Theatre, in her work with Cardboard Citizens and Augusto Boal first and in Odd Eyes’ programmes with young people, migrants and refugees, including speakers of English as second language, and participants with special education needs (SEND). The goal of this technique is to support participants to gain social awareness and confidence in expressing their views, creating a safe environment for unprejudiced dialogue and ultimately liberating and empowering people. We collaborate with young people multiple needs including those with Special Education Needs, neuro-diverse and disabled, young people excluded from school or at risk of being excluded, young refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, using film, documentaries and theatre projects to bring their voices to the forefront. We also offer placements and individual pastural care to help them progressing in their careers. This year we partnered with BT Sport and ELATT college to offer four young people with special education needs placements in film and media. Last year, a group of college students with special education needs collaborated with us to create a film about their experiences of volunteering in a day centre for the homeless. You can see these short documentaries on our website and Youtube channel. We also work with adult migrants, refugees and asylum seekers creating programmes that celebrate their journey and their resilience. In June 2022 we commemorated the Windrush generation with a revival of award-winner play Nine Night remounted with participants from the Caribbean community in London. Odd Eyes was born and continues to be a participant-led company. Artistic Director and founder Emilia Teglia set up the company in response to her positive personal experience of the arts as a young homeless migrant woman. In 2022, Emilia the Big Issue nominated Emilia in the top 100 changemakers for her contribution to social change through Odd Eyes Theatre.
