Mission Statement
To equip women who have suffered abuse or are vulnerable due to substance misuse, with the skills, hope and resources they need to make positive life changes.
About This Cause
Established in 2008, Stepping Stones is a women’s charity that provides practical and emotional support to vulnerable women affected by the complex and multiple issues of domestic abuse, offending, drug and alcohol misuse or poor mental health. Based in Luton and supporting women from the town and Central Bedfordshire, we address a growing gendered need. Last year, 92% of the women we supported were survivors of domestic abuse - there were 15,145 domestic abuse related incidents/crimes in Bedfordshire between April 2020-March 2021. Our trauma-informed service is driven directly by the needs of women; we listen and are non-judgemental; we inform and advocate; providing the women with skills, hope and resources to make positive choices. Through tailored one to one support, group therapy and counselling, our team of passionate and experienced practitioners work collaboratively to equip and inspire women to make positive changes, creating a better future for themselves, their children, their families and communities. Uniquely, we provide free childcare ensuring all women can access our services. Our Luton hub is a place that women feel safe and can benefit from food, clothes and toiletries donations as well as access to free counselling and employment support. We have partnerships with other agencies including social services, drugs and alcohol services, probation and sexual health to name a few. We have a strong track record and reputation, working with over 3500 women over the past 14 years. And we know our support works; 89% of service users say the service is very good, 71% feel better about themselves after exiting the service; and 74% are more optimistic about the future. Through our help, women report improvements in their parenting, accommodation and access to health services. One client said “Stepping Stones got me through the darkest time of my life.”
