About This Cause
The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is a unique model, bringing life into the heart of deprived communities, acting as the catalyst for change and providing routes out of poverty. Our weekly community hubs provide a place where local people can meet, volunteer, and engage with each other. Our innovative model helps families maximise their resources. The food and goods we bring create financial savings. We partner with over 50 existing community venues around the North West and North East, working 6 days a week. Each hub generates footfall with at least 50 residents attending every week. The stability and reliability of the hubs builds community engagement and provides affordable healthy fresh food and goods locally. To underpin our offer, we have over 20 years’ experience of unlocking surplus food and goods from industry and have developed our own supplies of groceries and goods directly from major retailers including Morrisons, Amazon, Tesco, Asda, Booths, Iceland and many manufacturers including Kelloggs, Soreen and Mars. Our processes are responsive, agile and have resulted in over 2000 tonnes of edible surplus food and household goods being used by people rather than wasted. This unique blending of innovative supply agreements and community-based food hubs has proved to be high-impact and sustainable. We have grown to 50 weekly food hubs from nothing in 5 years. Food is the bedrock but it is only the start. We recognise an increased and pressing need to widen the impact of our weekly events – to develop a hyper local ecosystem of support enabling people to improve their prospects, access services and strengthen support networks.
