Mission Statement
Move into Wellbeing® To support people with Parkinson’s and other mobility restrictions and neurological conditions through specially crafted weekly dance, movement, and exercise classes, and to raise public awareness of the lives of those living with these conditions.
About This Cause
Move into Wellbeing® is a small charity, formed by former professional dancer Donna Schoenherr in 2014. Her father had Parkinson’s for 30 years and Move into Wellbeing® is dedicated to him and is a living legacy to his life, courage, and strength. The charity has two main aims: to support people with Parkinson’s and other mobility restrictions and neurological conditions and to raise public awareness of the lives of those living with these conditions. Move into Wellbeing provides unique and specially crafted weekly dance, movement, and exercise classes for people with a wide range of movement and balance issues, taught by highly trained specialist dance teachers and supported by volunteers. There is also research at present into how this work could be of assistance to those with Long-Covid. The dance and movement in the classes are especially important for co-ordination, flexibility and balance, all conducive to improved management of daily tasks that may be difficult. The exercises are both chair-based and standing, but all material is adaptable and clear guidance is provided at each step along the way of the class. Each class is devised and run by members of our experienced team and includes music and dance influences from all over the world and draws on classical, folk and modern styles. Each class consists of a series of dance movements and exercises to music with an emphasis on rhythmic patterns, spatial awareness, and a whole-body work-out utilising large muscle groups and dexterity. Family members and carers are encouraged to join in the classes, no prior experience of dance is necessary and all levels of fitness and ability are catered for and celebrated. Classes are available across the London Boroughs of Hounslow and Ealing and for those unable to attend in person, classes are both live-streamed and available as videos. In addition to the physical benefits, the classes bring personal enjoyment and relief, and aim to advance social interactions and reduce isolation, not only for the participants, but also for their family, partners, and carers and thus form the centre of a network where problems and potential solutions are shared and friendships nurtured. In attending our classes, the participants are endeavouring to improve their own lives and those of their family members and carers. The Move into Wellbeing programme raises public awareness of Parkinson’s not only through the actual classes but also by regular coverage in the press, a wide variety of social and fund-raising events and performances and on social media. Move into Wellbeing is the only organisation of its kind in the Chiswick, West London area and Parkinson’s UK, Dance for Parkinson’s UK Network, Dance for PD®, Chiswick Together, Neurological Consultants and local GP practices refer people to their classes.
