Mission Statement
Doctors with Africa CUAMM UK’s (“CUAMM UK”) mission is to advocate the universal right to health and promote the values of international solidarity, justice and peace. We work to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable African communities with a long-term development perspective. With this mission, CUAMM UK’s main objectives are: (1) To improve the health status of communities in Africa, in the firm conviction that health is not a consumer good but a universal human right and that, therefore, access to health services cannot be a privilege; and (2) To promote a positive attitude and solidarity towards Africa — the duty of fostering interest and hope for the future of Africa, and commitment among institutions and public opinion.
About This Cause
CUAMM UK is an international NGO working to strengthen health systems in sub-Saharan Africa to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities with a long-term development perspective through health systems strengthening. It operates in nine countries in Sub-Saharan Africa - Angola, Ethiopia, Central African Republic, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Ivory Coast - and provides technical assistance and training to 18 other countries in the continent. Working in close partnership with the ministries of health and local health authorities, CUAMM UK aims to address the most pressing health issues in the continent. Hence, its primary focus areas are maternal and child health, adolescent health, nutrition, communicable and non-communicable diseases and universal health coverage. CUAMM UK interventions draw on the extensive experience of Medici con l’Africa CUAMM (“CUAMM”), the biggest Italian-based INGO dedicated to healthcare development in Africa, founded in 1950. CUAMM has more than 70 years of experience planning and implementing health cooperation projects, providing quality health services along the continuum of care, from communities to health facilities to hospitals, and guaranteeing referral among these levels of care. The organization has a strong track record on healthcare projects from the demand side (e.g. community services, referral system, antenatal care) to delivery of services (e.g. improving quality in health centres and hospitals) in urban, suburban and rural areas in more stable and fragile settings. CUAMM has also responded to several epidemics (e.g. Marburg, Ebola, Measles, Cholera, Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers, COVID-19), environmental emergencies (e.g. Cyclone Idai in Mozambique and drought emergency in Angola) and humanitarian crises resulting from political conflicts (e.g. Cabo Delgado in Mozambique). CUAMM has long experience in training local health professionals, from doctors and nurses to midwives, lab technicians and community health workers, ensuring the creation of local capacity for stronger and sustainable health systems. Alongside projects’ implementation, the INGO also conducts operational research in partnership with national and international research institutes, with 193 published research articles from 2013 to 2022.
