About This Cause
Notts Gymnastics Academy provides gymnastics opportunities for all ages and abilities whilst aiming to develop health, fitness and social integration, and contributing towards physical and psychological well-being of our gymnasts. We offer a structured system and pathway providing all our members a suitable opportunity to experience gymnastics, regardless of age or ability; through Women’s, Men's, Acro, Gymnastics For All, Preschool, Adult sessions and Disability inclusive classes. We aim to increase the skill and fitness levels of all gymnasts using general and precise conditioning and preparation. Gymnastics, in young people promotes a healthy lifestyle, better co-ordination, strength development, flexibility, social skills, confidence, politeness, work ethic, determination and discipline. We have a large membership of approximately 1500 gymnasts who walk through our doors every week. We work extremely hard to provide the highest level of coaching support to every one of our members. In our general classes we have created a dedicated training space specifically for the GFA (Gymnastics For All) gymnasts and work a 1:8 coach to gymnast ratio. We have structured Pre-school classes including parent and toddler, and independent classes as well as casual drop in sessions open to our community to benefit from our space. We hold weekly disability inclusive sessions including rebound therapy and offer one to one sessions if relevant to meet the needs of our gymnasts. As well as providing for a large number of the local population, we also have a number of high performance athletes. Notts boys’ squad has had gymnasts represent GB at the World Championships, the Junior European Championships and the Junior Commonwealth Games. We have also had boys in the GB squads every year from 1992 with over 20 boys having been in the squads in this time. We have produced several British champions in various age levels and on various apparatus and they have competed and won medals at international events in Europe and worldwide. The Notts U14 team has won the British Team Championships six times and has never been out of the top three in the 13 years we have taken part. Sam Oldham is a member of the men's squad and won a team bronze in the 2012 Olympic Games and is a two-time European Championships silver medallist on high bar. Notts have had over 30 Women's Artistic gymnasts in the GB squads from 1997 and have produced several British Champions in various age-groups and taken several gold medals at international events throughout Europe. Notts have had gymnasts represent both England and Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. We are home to 2 female Olympians: Becky Downie, who was the European and Commonwealth Bars champion in 2014, and World Silver Bars Medallist in 2019 and Ellie Downie who made history by becoming the first British gymnast to win a major championships all-around medal by taking the gold medal in the 2017 European Championships, and took silver on vault at the 2019 World Championships. Both Downie sisters also helped GB win a historic bronze team medal at the 2015 World Championships, and in 2016, Ellie and Becky Downie represented team GB at the Rio Olympics, the team finished a historic 5th and Ellie Downie placed 13th all-around. In addition, Oliver Kettleborough, a member of the boy's squad and is leading the way in Men's Disability gymnastics after winning the 2018 and 2019 British Disability Artistic Championships. Notts Gymnastics Academy works to continually grow to cater for as many of the local community as possible, and be a centre of excellence supporting the highest level of performance in sport across multiple disciplines.
