Mission Statement
FTW endeavours to stop the suffering of wild animals in captivity and ultimately find a way to release them into sanctuaries or better equipped zoos. Also assisting with the betterment of existing zoos and empowering its staff to care for and protect the animals in their care. We aim to provide education and support in terms of professional carers, handlers and vets and to introduce augmented and virtual reality into establishments as a replacement of some species, thereby ultimately eliminating animal trafficking.
About This Cause
Following the successful release of "the world's loneliest elephant," Kaavan from Pakistan's Islamabad Zoo, Free The Wild has set out to undertake four new projects leading into 2021. 1) Bua Noi Bua Noi, the lone female gorilla has been isolated for 30 years at the top of a shopping mall in Bangkok. She has no mental stimulation other than the few human faces she sees, she has never felt direct sunlight nor has she ever met another gorilla. Free The Wild is working with the Aspinall Foundation to give her a new home. 2) Lucy Lucy the Asian elephant has called Edmonton Zoo her home for over 40 years. Being an Asian elephant, her natural habitat is warm and humid, but the Edmonton Zoo offers sub-arctic conditions for months at a time. Lucy has has been alone since 2006, she has never met another Asian elephant and reports suggest that she is physically and mentally unwell. Free The Wild aims to have her properly treated and, in partnership with LEAP, have her moved to an appropriate sanctuary. 3) Mundi Mundi is the only African elephant at Mayagüez Zoo, Puerto Rico. She has endured two tropical storms and continues to live in isolation now that the zoo is reportedly closed. Mundi, along with hundreds of other animals at the zoo, is in urgent need of medical and nutritional care. In collaboration with the established campaigns to free Mundi, Free The Wild aims to work with the Puerto Rican government and Mayagüez Zoo to find an amicable solution to have Mundi and the other animals properly cared for and rehomed where possible. 4) Billy Billy the Asian elephant has called Los Angeles Zoo home for nearly thirty years. In that time, he's had little-to-no stimulation and developed stereotypic behaviours, commonly associated with isolation, frustration and stress. Campaigners have been advocating for Billy's release for years and almost made headway when the Zoo agreed to improve Billy's enclosure. It seems, however, that the improvements were inadequate and Billy's health and wellbeing remains at risk. 2021 will see Free The Wild working with groups such as Free Billy the Elephant and the Elephant Guardians of Los Angeles to have Billy moved to a reputable sanctuary. 2020 was a great year for the charity, despite the limitations imposed by COVID as we were able to sign-off on a 5-year project and finalise Kaavan's journey from Islamabad Zoo in Pakistan to a sanctuary in Cambodia. Prior to this, we were able to help Vishwa, the young Asian male, to escape the abusive confines of his temple home in Sri Lanka, and have him moved to one of the country's best care centres. With your help, we can work to achieve the same outcomes for Bua, Billy, Mundi and Lucy and hundreds of other wild animals kept in stressful, abusive or inappropriate conditions.
