Mission Statement
Our vision is of a world where our oceans are healthy, properly protected and full of diverse life. We champion the need for plastic-free oceans and an end to over-exploitation of marine life through our global projects and campaigns, as well as at our marine animal sanctuaries. The SEA LIFE Trust currently has two marine animal sanctuaries – our Cornish Seal Sanctuary in the UK, and our world-first Beluga Whale Sanctuary in Iceland.
About This Cause
A world first initiative, the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary opened in May 2019 and provides a more natural home for two previously captive beluga whales, Little White and Little Grey, who used to live in Chang Feng Ocean World in Shanghai, China. Little White and Little Grey travelled 6,000 miles from China via air, land and sea to their new Sanctuary home, located in a large, natural bay in the Westman Islands, just off the south coast of Iceland. We hope our Sanctuary will encourage others to put an end to the exploitation of these beautiful whales for entertainment purposes and take steps to ensure their future welfare. Our Beluga Whale Sanctuary is also home to a Puffin Rescue Centre. The Westman Islands are host to the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in the world. When puffin chicks, known as pufflings, fledge they are meant to use the moon for guidance and fly towards the sea. However, many of these little birds become confused and disorientated, following the bright street lights and landing in the town. This is where the Puffling Patrol comes to the rescue. All pufflings found by the local Puffling Patrol are brought to our Puffin Rescue Centre at the Beluga Whale Sanctuary where they are cared for until they can be released back into the wild. At our Cornish Seal Sanctuary in the UK, sick and injured seal pups from around the Cornish coastline are rescued and cared for by our dedicated animal care team at the Sanctuary’s Seal Hospital. Once they have made a full recovery the pups are released back into the sea. Some pups may have sustained injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild. They may be blind or have a long-term health condition. Our Cornish Seal Sanctuary provides a permanent home for these seals where they are able to live out the rest of their lives happily and in safety, while being expertly cared for by our team. Alongside our marine animal sanctuaries, the SEA LIFE Trust also works to protect our oceans and marine life through our global projects and campaigns. We have campaigned for increased protection for our oceans through more Marine Protected Areas, supported projects which help to reduce the wave of plastic pollution entering our oceans, including discarded fishing equipment known as Ghost Gear, and funding important research into the effects of plastic pollution. In 2019, we held our first ever 24 Hour Global Beach Clean event, where teams all around the world worked together to remove almost 2,000 kgs of litter in just one day! That’s the equivalent weight of two adult beluga whales!
