Mission Statement
At Made In Hackney we believe everyone should have access to healthy, affordable food that’s good for people and planet.
About This Cause
Made In Hackney is a London wide award-winning community cookery school. Since we opened our doors in 2012 we have helped >15 ,000 people lead healthier, happier, more connected and environmentally sustainable lives. Our pioneering work brings communities together to change dietary norms to healthy, affordable, planet-friendly food. We do this by teaching people how to grow, cook and eat more plants and where to access local, seasonal, lower cost organic food. These changes not only improve our participant’s health, but the planets too. Our pioneering work has been featured in a range of media – Sky News, BBC News – and we recently appeared on Jamie Oliver’s channel 4 television series as an example of community food intervention best practice. What makes Made In Hackney’s approach unique is we have always recognised the interconnectivity of the spiralling health, and climate crisis’. Therefore, our work focuses on engaging and collaborating with societies most vulnerable who are most effected by health inequalities, food poverty, and the impacts of the climate crisis (e.g. rising food prices, heating costs, pollution, living costs etc). Our work seeks to address the above by giving groups who stand the most to gain the skills, knowledge and inspiration to feed themselves a sustainable, affordable and nutritious diet. We do this with a programme centred around hands-on, plant-based cookery and food growing courses and classes. This core offer is complimented by celebration parties, community fun days, employability skills/accredited training, educational resources and content, peer-to-peer learning events, and a training-rich volunteer programme. In March 2020 we paused our usual programme to launch a COVID19 response of online classes, telephone support for those not online, and an emergency direct to door community meal service. At the peak of the crisis we provided 600 meals a day across Hackney direct to households who needed support with food. Today we continue to provide meals and hope to be able to do so for as long as there is need. We aim to incorporate training and jobs for local young people into the community meal service. We work with a network of over 80 partner organisations such as housing associations, third sector groups, charities, grassroots community groups, NHS services, youth services and more. Via these organisations the communities we work with include young carers, young people leaving care, low income families, family groups, people with long term health challenges (diabetes type 2 patients, stroke survivors, hearing impaired, visually impaired), people with learning difficulties, migrant communities, BAME groups, the gypsy traveller community, people in recovery, people vulnerable of homelessness, pensioners and new mums who are recovering addicts.
