Mission Statement

We work with girls and young women, offering them digital media and storytelling training, techniques and skills and mentoring and support to enter the media industries. We develop and provide the tools necessary to bring their untold stories and messages to the local and global stage. We do this to help rebalance the mainstream media landscape, bringing in the voices of unrepresented girls and young women to properly represent our diverse democracy. We take a rights-based approach. In particular, we respect the right to participate, right to be heard, and the right to express views, which we believe deserve to be heard with respect. We are committed to diversity at every level of our organisation and activities and we prioritise sustainability - both of our work and our natural environment - in all we do.

About This Cause

Who we are: Established in June 2016, Global Girl Media UK works with girls and young women*, especially those from under-represented communities, offering media education, mentoring, internships, work opportunities and membership of our thriving alumni network. What we do: Through digital media training, we help girls and young women to amplify their unique voices, bringing their stories to global platforms. GlobalGirls make content by, for and about young women. They stand behind the camera or in front of the camera and are always at the centre of the story. To borrow the words of GlobalGirl graduate Danielle Desouza, ‘We believe that being a woman and being from a minority are not obstacles or faults, but drivers for creating change’. How we do it: We provide free training and support to girls and young women aged 14-22 in writing, reporting, broadcasting, podcasting and documentary filmmaking in our yearly GlobalGirl Media UK Summer Academy - preparing them for careers in the digital media industries. We encourage GlobalGirls to find their own voices and tell stories from their own perspectives. We provide a safe space where they gain the confidence to overcome obstacles that may hold them back. We showcase female filmmaking talent from around the world in our yearly GlobalGirl Media Film Festival. Why we do it: Our rationale is simple. One of the keys to achieving gender equality in the UK, and globally, is to bring balance to the stories in the media. Mainstream news reports and features have traditionally been told from a white male point of view. Representation of girls and women is often sexist, stereotyped or simply non-existent. To achieve balanced content that truly represents our diverse nation and world, we need to change the voices behind the messages - bringing more girls and young women, including those of colour, into the media industry. Our Vision: We envision a world where young women from all communities stand up as leaders, speak out and contribute to developing an inclusive 21st-century media environment; where they drive and influence change on issues affecting their lives and where stories from their personal perspectives are represented with respect. *We seek diversity in our student cohorts, including in ethnicity, religion, gender, ability, sexuality and socio-economic background, to enhance cross-cultural learning, inspiration and aspirations.
