Mission Statement
At Foreland Fields Charity we have a clear mission: to offer support, education, and life opportunities to young people living with Profound, Severe, and Complex Needs, enabling them to achieve their own goals.
About This Cause
We have created a first of it’s kind education, recreation and training facility for special education needs young people and adults. This will also be a facility to cater for people with disabilities. The project is known as “The Hive”. We have built a low level, single storey, fully accessible pavilion that will enable the delivery of a community specialist training and learning hub, which will be situated in East Kent. This centre houses an outdoor training facility, learning facilities such as an outdoor classroom, a horticulture area, a cycling track, a forest school , a football pitch / sports field and an art learning space. The pavilion will include hoists in the changing facilities, accessible toilets, a multi-purpose education, activity/training space and a training kitchen. The pavilion will be fully accessible, with hoists in the changing facilities and accessible toilets. Donations have already been provided towards this project, which has covered the cost of the development of the sports fields, linking roads, utilities, forest school and a horticulture centre. The funding for the building has also been raised, and it has been installed. The project is ready to begin! We need support to provide the wide range of activities that we have planned! Need: This is a new facility. Currently, there is no such facility serving children and young people with disabilities in the Thanet area, which means they struggle to access relevant education/training and recreation opportunities outside of school hours or when they have completed their statutory schooling. This facility will enable hundreds of children and young people from special schools in the local area to access a range of Learning and training activities, reducing social exclusion and improving physical and mental health outcomes while increasing their life chances through work experience and further education. The centre will also be accessible by young people with learning difficulties aged 19-25, who have left school. Still, it would benefit from continuing to access structured activities to provide social, learning and training opportunities. The school is Kent’s only PMLD/SLD provision in Thanet and is an Ofsted Good school. The school has which has grown from 150 in 2018 to 250 students in 2022.Thanet is the 5th most deprived ward in the Country when measured for young people’s education, skills and training, and is ranked as the most deprived Local Authority in Kent, as well as being in the 10% most deprived areas of England (indices of deprivation 2019). Thanet has the highest percentage of people living with a long-term health condition or disability in Kent, with 23.4% of Thanet’s population registered as disabled. At Foreland Fields School, 40.7% of pupils receive free school meals, and 6.30% are in care. Our children and young people have learning disabilities and complex needs and often come from backgrounds of social deprivation. Due to these barriers and a lack of local provision many of our students are socially isolated once they leave school. They struggle to access appropriate learning and training opportunities afforded to their mainstream peers. The Hive will address the need to reduce the social isolation of our children and young people through increased opportunities with the resulting impact of improved physical and mental health outcomes, as well as the development of life, independence and work skills. For these reasons we will; Delivery/ what will we actually do ( Options selected): - Provide a training and learning hub for students in the school, recently left the school, parents of students in the school and recently left. Also for SEND adults in the community and all SEND students and adults in Kent. - Enable our partners to access the inclusive “The Hive” hub for minimal cost. Our partners tell us that high rental costs and lack of availability of inclusive facilities is a huge barrier for them when trying to expand their services. · Work collaboratively with our partners in order to access funding streams to increase the numbers of young people accessing clubs (through increased staffing, increased session number and reducing costs to parents/carers). · Blend in-school provision with out of school provision. For example; the local disability football club running coaching sessions. This will familiarise students and parents/carers with our partner organisations, enabling familiarity and a seamless transition from in-school to out of school provision. · Continuously seek further partners who provide Arts, Vocational skills and Training opportunities for children and young people in order to provide a wide range of opportunity and maximise use of the facilities. IMPACT Assessment Aim: To improve the quality and range of services by the creation of a community disability learning and training hub that will: Enable the full realisation of the school’s life skill and independence curriculum. - Be used by the school during term time and by a range of partners in the evenings, weekends and holidays. All of our partners work exclusively with children and young people with severe learning difficulties and complex needs. - Provide a safe space for our students and other local young people with similar needs to access a range of ‘out of school’ opportunities such as, Gardening, woodwork, Forest School and Cycling, all supported by a range of specialists such as East Kent Mencap, Thanet Galaxy disability Football and Inclusive Sport. - Provide a training space and community café for our students and their families. - The complex will be supervised by Foreland field staff but run by student, young adults and adults with disabilities. - Our children and young people have learning disabilities, complex needs and often come from backgrounds of social deprivation. Due to these barriers and a lack of local provision many of our students are socially isolated once they leave school. They struggle to access the learning and training afforded to their mainstream peers. - The Hive will address the need to reduce social isolation of our children and young people through increases training, learning and social opportunities with the resulting impact of improved physical and mental health outcomes, as well as the development of life, independence and work skills.
