Mission Statement
We're on a mission to equip young people in schools and their local community with the digital skills and leadership needed to succeed in existing & future digital roles, whilst developing their digital well-being and leadership through active learning. Our goal is to enable them to excel in both current and future digital careers while equipping them with the technical and personal attributes necessary to address the ever-changing needs of our local and global communities. We inspire young people to become confident, discerning users and developers of technology and enable them to unleash their potential through an understanding of AI, coding, data science, cyber security, engineering and internet safety. We use our vast experience of increasing the engagement and self-efficacy of girls in computer science and digital experiences to assist the development of future diverse digital leaders and change makers with an active digital lifestyle. We will achieve this through the development of contextual learning resources for young people and the professional development of teachers and youth leaders to disseminate our mission and extend our experiences for the digital ambassadors of tomorrow.
About This Cause
Digit is a charity that helps to equip young people with the necessary digital skills to be discerning users and future digital leaders ranging from 4- to 18-year-olds. This is achieved by working with both schools, libraries and community groups with a focus on areas of high deprivation and reaching the underserved, underrepresented and underprivileged. Activities the charity undertakes include professional development and train-the-trainer activities, in-school or in-community workshops, seasonal camps, and the creation of inspirational and contextual learning activities. These activities often include a focus on computational thinking, coding, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber security and digital well-being and internet safety and are all contextualised through climate action, sustainability and nature. The charity ensures that where possible, experiences it provides ensure that children can code-in and explore-out, ensuring that young people are able to understand the importance of having an active digital lifestyle. Examples of such work include the charity’s use of physical computing devices such as the micro:bit and the pico where young people can code devices and take them outside to explore nature and collect data about activity and sport as just a few examples. Digit also provides activities for children to engage with nature including activities using technology to monitor environments with data logging such as national bird watch and hedgehog habitats. Alongside these experiences, the charity produced engaging resources for community leaders and teachers to inspire the young people and future digital leaders who they inspire with contexts including women’s football with our tackle coding resources, the adventures of Fifi the llama, sharing the importance of llama antibodies to tackling viruses such as COVID. Further activities include train like an astronaut resources where young female role models field of Space take young people through a range of fitness activities where they code devices to monitor steps, heart rate and acceleration and helping young people to code in Python to mix music with the theme of social justice. Digit works with schools to help them contextualise their curriculum around sustainability and enable children to be climate-conscious with technology. Through the work with Amazon Future Engineer, the charity has developed the Code for Climate Action curriculum highlighting how technology can be used to monitor conditions to predict natural disasters and develop early warning systems to community effectively with communities. Digit also provides the opportunity for schools and community groups to nominate young people for the contributions and creativity in computing. The CODE awards are led by young professional in AI and cyber security, and they provide awards for using technology for good, digital leadership and developing solutions to support digital wellbeing.
