THE KELLY FOUNDATION

Mission Statement

Everyone at the Kelly Foundation has been touched by the tragedy of suicide. Each case represents an extreme consequence of poor mental health. We seek to support local people with mental health issues by listening and observing in order to understand and then to provide a bespoke support programme. This will typically include regular one-to-one sessions with our dedicated team, which includes Support Workers, Clinical Psychologist, Life Coach and Mentors. We will be on hand to help lead down an individual pathway to a healthier life. In the medium term we will also focus on social inclusion for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) by way of activities and events, which will encourage friendships and prevent loneliness with our 4Kelly social clubs. We provide a supported working environment and training in our community café at Pinetrees.

About This Cause

About our charity The Kelly Foundation is a charity that believes that too many people in Swindon take their own lives. To help reduce the risk, we adopt a holistic approach to poor mental health. By this we mean we don't just support individuals with poor mental health, depression and anxiety through emotional support in one-to-ones. We go further in seeking to uncover the causes of the stresses which contribute to the client's poor health, then together, we try and make things better. The Kelly Foundation aims to help Swindon people's mental health to reduce the risk of suicide by providing timely, holistic support. At the beginning of 2024 we had 43 Service Users with 13 on our waiting list. Our charity is entirely funded by donations from generous individuals and organisations and our own fund-raising activities. We very much appreciate the very generous donations and have put them to very good use. It enabled us to improve the lives of local people with debilitating mental health issues by offering a one-stop shop for a holistic and personalised support package. This allows continuity of support, so they do not have to go to multiple agencies for different services, see different individuals whenever they access those services or wait on lengthy waiting lists for appointments. All costs were met by the charity. In addition to one-to-one support, we also run a community café with supported work experience and training. This provides an informal social venue as well as being ideal for some of our group sessions such as the PTSD and Eating Disorder groups. Our office and café are located together by two neighbourhoods which are amongst the 10% most deprived in the country. The NHS Morbidity Survey 2014 says "One adult in six had a common mental disorder (CMD)" and goes on to report that "Nearly half of adults (43.4%) think that they have had at least one of eight common mental disorders at some point". In fact, we are all only one-life event away from a mental health calamity. It could be bereavement, a divorce, losing a job, or another trauma that has impacted our mental health. Some of us will suffer short term and others will sadly suffer longer term. Mental health doesn't discriminate, it can happen to anyone but social disadvantage, isolation or other handicap invariably undermines any ability to cope. We are constantly attempting to raise funds to allow us to address our waiting list of unfortunate people. There is a great unmet need in the local area and we hope to grow to help meet it by raising at least £85,000 this year. We are entirely reliant on the support of private and company donations, grant making organisations and our own fund-raising efforts. A holistic Approach, what does it mean? We become actively involved in seeking to support clients unravel those causes. Illness can arise from severe, prolonged debt and financial pressures, marital or relationship breakdown, loss of job or status in other ways, alcohol or substance abuse, a traumatic event and quite often, previous life experiences. Our involvement can mean hiring in specific skills and techniques we don't have, helping find the right benefits, joint visits to universal Credit, joint GP visits, advocating to housing and to other statutory bodies, liaising with drug and alcohol specialists, help via supported employment back into mainstream work, even sometimes speaking up for clients in court settings. Whatever it takes, we will do our best. Who are we? The Kelly Foundation (4Kelly) is a free service established to provide listening, understanding, guidance and support to those experiencing anxiety, depression or poor mental health from other reasons. We will seek to uncover the causes rather than focus just on the symptoms. What drives us? Unless you are wealthy and can afford private therapy, it is almost impossible to access this and especially difficult at a time when pressure on incomes has never been as great. GP surgeries have very little in the way of options available to them when trying to offer individuals more than prescriptions for ant-depressant drugs. The 4Kelly team adopt a holistic approach and support you with one-to-one, planned, long-term therapy in your journey to better health. Where are we? We are based in the Pinetrees Centre on the Circle at Pinehurst. There is lots of parking outside our offices or various busses stop across the green.
