Mission Statement

Since our founding in 1967 as the first modern hospice, St. Christopher's has remained dedicated to providing holistic palliative care - in other words, to providing our patients with the highest quality of medical and personal care at the end of their lives. We believe in incorporating the highest standard of medical treatment together with a commitment to supporting the mental and emotional needs of our patients, in order to ensure that their final days and months are spent in the most comfortable and compassionate setting as possible.

About This Cause

St Christopher’s Hospice exists to promote and provide skilled and compassionate palliative care of the highest quality. Our vision is of a world in which all dying people and those close to them have access to appropriate care and support, when they need it, wherever they need it and whoever they are. We serve a diverse population of 1.5 million people in the London boroughs of Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark, reaching some of England’s most deprived areas. All our care is provided free of charge. St Christopher’s is an adult hospice caring for patients from the age of 18 upwards. St Christopher’s care services are delivered in a range of settings including patients’ own homes, our four inpatient wards and our Anniversary Centre. Our palliative care is delivered by coordinated teams of specialist doctors and nurses; physiotherapists and occupational therapists; social workers and welfare support workers and also includes adult bereavement services psychiatrist support; arts and complementary therapies; spiritual and religious care; and specialist support for bereaved children. End of Life Care Education and Research has always been at the centre of our work. St Christopher's extends its teaching and influence nationally and internationally through extensive programmes of education and research. Every year over 7,000 health and social care professionals attend our Education Centre courses and outreach programmes. The Education Programme offers a wide range of courses and training in Palliative and End of Life Care. St Christopher’s Hospice merged with Harris HospisCare in 2008. This development was the outcome of a longstanding professional relationship between the two organisations, sharing the same values, standards and commitment to high quality end of life care. Since then we have integrated our services to provide expert care to our communities while ensuring that the funds our supporters and local commissioners entrust us with are well spent. In October 2013 Harris HospisCare was renamed St Christopher’s Bromley to acknowledge the significance of the Bromley services based at Caritas House. Together we are the St Christopher’s Group. We are a registered charity. It costs over £17.5 million every year to deliver all our services. Only about one third of our income comes from the NHS. We must raise more than £11 million to continue to deliver our patient and family services free of charge. This balance must be raised from grants, legacies, the generous support of our local community, local businesses, trusts and through our shops. St Christopher’s Hospice offers: - 48 beds on four wards providing in-patient medical and nursing care led by consultants in palliative medicine and experienced and specially qualified nurses - Home Care led by clinical nurse specialists in teams focused on each of the five local authorities and Clinical Commissioning Group areas – Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. - The Anniversary Centre offers a ‘social hub’ for patients and families, and includes a café with internet access and a programme of social events which is also open to the general public - Extensive planned day care and a range of supportive care services, including creative and complementary therapies and delivered in a variety of settings - Inpatient and home care multi-professional teams that include social workers, chaplain and spiritual care lead, welfare advisors, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, complementary and creative therapists, bereavement service volunteers and others - A specialist service for all bereaved children and their families.
