Mission Statement
Changing lives through education, training and wellbeing programmes.
About This Cause
Central YMCA is one of the UK’s longest-serving health and wellbeing charities, founded in 1844 with a mission that remains powerfully relevant today: to support people of all backgrounds and abilities in achieving healthier, happier lives through education, training, and physical wellbeing. At its core, Central YMCA believes in the transformational power of opportunity. Whether it’s helping young people gain the skills they need to thrive, supporting mental health through inclusive fitness programmes, or creating accessible pathways to lifelong learning, the charity works tirelessly to level the playing field for those who need it most. Our Impact Areas: • Health & Wellbeing: We provide inclusive fitness programmes and specialist exercise for older adults and people with long-term health conditions; creating welcoming, judgment-free spaces where physical activity becomes a tool for building confidence, resilience, and connection. • Education & Training: Central YMCA is a nationally recognised training provider, offering apprenticeships, vocational qualifications, and employability programmes that help individuals (particularly those from underserved communities) unlock their potential. From sports and fitness to health and social care, our courses equip learners with practical skills and meaningful career opportunities. • Youth Empowerment: We work with disadvantaged young people to remove barriers and provide life-changing support. Through tailored interventions, we help young people stay in education, improve their mental wellbeing, and find a positive direction in life. • Community Outreach: We partner with local authorities, schools, and employers to reach people where they are - ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing health and educational support. In a world of growing inequality, access to health, education, and opportunity can be life-defining. Central YMCA bridges those gaps, supporting over 20,000 people each year to improve their wellbeing, achieve their goals, and belong to a stronger, healthier community. From a young person re-engaging with education, to an older adult regaining confidence after illness, to someone finding their first job in a new industry - we are there every step of the way, helping people transform their lives.
