Mission Statement

The Material World Foundation was established by George Harrison in 1973 to sponsor diverse forms of artistic expression and encourage the exploration of alternative life views and philosophies. The Foundation also supports established charitable organizations with consideration to those with special needs.

About This Cause

With the release of George Harrison’s 1973 album entitled Living in the Material World, he realized a wish to establish a charitable foundation. The publishing royalties of that album were donated by George, in perpetuity, to the Material World Foundation. George said of this time, "I wrote a song called 'Living in the Material World' and it was from that I decided to call the foundation the Material World Foundation. Most people would think of the material world as representing purely money and greed and take offence. But in my view, it means a physical world. It's the idea that if it is money and greed, then give the greedy money away in the material world.” George created the Foundation to encourage the exploration of alternate and diverse forms of artistic expression, life views and philosophies. He also wanted to be able to support established charitable organizations with considerations to those with special needs. In the many years since inception, the Material World Charitable Foundation has supported hundreds of individuals and organizations. The Foundation in some cases has literally transformed people's lives and in others has made life more bearable in the face of extreme suffering and adversity.
