Mission Statement
Age UK Plymouth exists to care for and work with people aged 50+, those living with dementia and carers, in and around the City of Plymouth, to improve their quality of life through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence.
About This Cause
Age UK Plymouth have supported older people in Plymouth since 1942 and are a well-established, trusted, and hugely valued organisation in the area. We are affiliated with Age UK but we are an independent charity and are responsible for raising our own funds. Money raised for the charity is used to support the local communities of Plymouth. Our services meet the needs of older people in a way that recognises their individuality and dignity. Tackling loneliness is a key aim of AUKP, with the focus of helping older people keep active, connected, and purposeful within their community. • Our Day Centre is designed to bring people together in a social setting and provide an opportunity to engage in meaningful and stimulating activities, all having a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing. • Our Dementia Day Centre (DDC in Plymstock) provides a safe space for those who need extra support. It provides care and support for people with memory loss, cognitive issues and all stages of dementia and provides much needed respite for carers. • Our weekly Forget Me Not’s group sees a day full of meaningful and stimulating activities including Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), proven to help maintain memory and mental functioning. This group work together in a fun and stimulating environment. Based on the demand for this service, this service will begin to operate for 2 days during the Spring of 2025. • We have a free Information and Advice service which includes information on rights and entitlements, local services and support available, as well as advice on staying safe and warm at home and housing options. Last year (23-24) we were able to secure £3.32m of entitled benefits to those in Plymouth. • We provide a Help at Home service which sees our teams support people in their homes with tasks such as; light cleaning, meal preparation, shopping, prescription collection, companionship or handyperson tasks. • Our Wellbeing Hub and Community Support includes weekly Community Cuppa and Jolly Elders Club, both providing an opportunity for people to get together, encouraging social engagement through various physical and creative activities. We also provide free IT training and Telephone Befriending. • Our Hospital Discharge Service exists solely to support the journey back to independence by offering a high-quality, flexible and free short-term service tailored to suit individual needs and aspirations for those leaving either of the city’s two hospitals and returning home. Our fully trained and experienced teams deliver a safe and caring service with an emphasis on promoting independence, social engagement, good health and wellbeing. By offering this service there has been no need for critical care from Adult Social Care interventions and it has prevented readmittance to hospitals. • The Veterans Project sees clients attend weekly Sticky Bun Mornings, monthly Brunch Clubs, Walking Football and a free counselling service. • Fundraising and campaigns - as we are responsible for raising our own funds we are always trying to think of new ways to raise money. Our events have included a Sahara Trek, Skydives, half marathons, international mountain climbs and charity banquets amongst other activities. 2025 will see us take part in waterfall abseils, running events and even Everest Base Camp in Nov! • Our Christmas campaign last year, saw us delivering hot meals, food parcels and winter warm parcels to those who were in need or could need leave their homes. We also hosted a party with a hot Xmas lunch, entertainment and food parcels, this was for those who could leave their homes and designed to help reduce loneliness and isolation. This campaign was supported by the public and organisations through monetary donations, food donations or people’s time.
