Mission Statement
CLS creates musical experiences in a way that is engaging, enjoyable, and enriching to everyone involved.
About This Cause
City of London Sinfonia (CLS) is a dynamic community of musicians. We believe all audiences' engagement in music is of equal value and that creativity is fundamental to our wellbeing. Our musicians are trained to be both skilled performers and participation leaders, enabling diverse audiences to connect with music and make music together. We take music to where communities already gather, whether that is through our participation work in community and healthcare settings, or at a concert venue. We want to ensure that everyone knows classical music is something for them to experience in their own way. Our signature performance style forms two-way communication and connection between musicians and audiences - presenting live music in unique, enriching, and thought-provoking ways. Our participation programme encompasses a range of community and healthcare projects and is the driving force behind everything today. This work in the field of mental health has grown its spirit of innovation across a range of sector-leading, research-driven programmes that engage people in interactive music-making and sharing across mental health settings, social prescribing, dementia care, and hospital settings. As a result of our unique approach, we were commended as runners-up in the 2020 Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble awards. In the 2020 Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Awards, we were awarded the Impact Award for our Sound Young Minds project, which provides opportunities for young people in psychiatric hospitals to work with each other and express themselves. We are one of three orchestras generating 37% of the total investment brought in by all UK orchestras to the healthcare sector (over £1.6m total). We have a proud and outstanding history of over thirty years' work in the field of music and mental health whilst also presenting work of the highest quality because of the investment we place on our musicians to become both skilled performers and participation leaders.
