Mission Statement

Islington Mind was established in 1985 to promote the preservation and safeguarding of mental health in the Borough of Islington. We believe that everyone has a right to good mental health and we aim to make a significant contribution to the recovery and quality of life of people who experience mental health problems. We also seek to support carers, tackle stigma and raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health. We aim to offer immediate access to community support and recovery pathways provided by our four resource centers across Islington. Our services are flexible and recovery-oriented, develop social networks, offer activities to nurture wellbeing, assist with access to employment training and education opportunities, and provide structured, individualised psycho-social therapies to enhance mental health self-management and independence. We focus on strengh and assets rather on identifying and solving problems, this includes the strengh and skills of our service users, staff and volunteers, and the assets available in our community. We are a user-led organisation, proactively seeking to engage service users in the design and evaluation of our services wherever possible. This is reflected in the composition of our Board of Trustees which provides governance and strategic direction to our organisation- 50% of our trsutees have some experience of mental health services, in line with a stated commitment in our constitution. We embrace community strengh and social value; we are firmly embedded within the local area and believe that a multi-agency approach to integrated care provision enables access to the best support ensuring long-term outcomes; we maintain close links with 60+ statutory and voluntry sector organisations.

About This Cause

Islington Mind provides mental health support to Londoners with a wide spectrum of mental health problems. We provide the Mental Health Recovery Pathway to Islington residents. The pathway comprises two services: the Integrated Community Support (ICS) offers day care support including activities, peer support groups and communal meals for people with mild / preventative mental health needs, and the Structured Intervention Support (SIS) offers individual psycho-social key working support, Reablement service (support for transition e.g. community re-integration following hospital admission) and talking therapy for people with complex / acute mental health needs Our commitment to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and marginalised individuals in our society is shown through the unique London-wide specialist provisions that we developed and deliver. Our LGBTQ+ service, Outcome, built its reputation London-wide as one of the only sanctuary spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals who experience mental health problems. The Freedom From Fear To Love project (FFFTL) is the first point of contact and support for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees who have had to flee their home countries because of their sexual / gender identity, and who suffer complex mental health problems as a result. Our Specialist Talking Therapies Clinic (STTC), provides talking therapies to individuals who are underserved by mainstream therapy provisions e.g. individuals from BME and from LGBTQ+ communities, asylum seekers and refugees, and people who experience psychosis. Other services include a specialist Mental Health Welfare Benefits Clinic (WBC), supporting service users to navigate the welfare system, a Community Recovery and Crisis Enablement Service (CRCE), supporting people to progress / maintain independence, a Women Only Space, specialist BAMER groups, and the Mother2Mother project funded by the Cripplegate Foundation - Islington Giving that supports women caregivers of people with mental health problems. These London-wide services have gained the confidence of major trusts and foundation such as the Big Lottery, the City Bridge trust, Lloyds Bank Foundation, the Pilgrim trust, National Mind, St James Place Foundation, Santander, Matrix Causes and ACT, and became leading examples of best practice among local agencies and across the Mind network. The Difference That We Make Through our various programmes our service users: • access opportunities to socialise, share experiences and find solutions to problems together. They gain positive social experience, make friends and expand social networks.
