Mission Statement

Our vision is for Kilburn to be a place where all residents have an equal opportunity to enjoy healthy, happy, fulfilling lives, from childhood to old age. We’re committed to cultivating a welcoming space that facilitates social connection, learning and good health. A place where local people of all backgrounds and circumstances can come together, share experiences, and access a wide range of resources, activities and opportunities that enrich their lives.

About This Cause

Abbey Community Centre in Kilburn is dedicated to helping all local residents live healthy and fulfilling lives. While open to all, we focus especially on assisting elderly individuals who are among the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in the country, as well as disadvantaged families with children under 5. Membership of Abbey's Community Activities Programme is free. We take a multifaceted and compassionate approach to address the most pressing local needs and enhance preventative health. For low-income families, we offer essential services including stay-and-play drop-ins, crèche, and specialist outreach visits. (372 children support annually + their families) Recognising the unique challenges faced by elderly residents, who are severely affected by deprivation, social isolation, and loneliness, our centre offers a wide range of free health and wellbeing activities. These include fitness sessions, socials, healthy cooking classes, community meals, digital inclusion initiatives, learning and creative groups. Our Community Activities Programme (excluding Children’s Services) has 712 active members. Our commitment to the holistic wellbeing of the elderly is exemplified by our Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service-winning befriending scheme, Kilburn Good Neighbours (previously funded by HWCT). This initiative involves regular volunteer home-visits, providing companionship, emotional support and a vital safety net to combat loneliness. (117 members, 34 volunteers) Our centre serves as a hub for crucial information and advice. We facilitate signposting and referrals, connecting individuals with external services to address specific challenges. Our 5-day-a-week Warm Welcome Space counteracts the harmful effects of fuel poverty particularly during adverse weather conditions (1100 individual beneficiaries annually). To address food insecurity, we provide weekly food parcels from Felix Project donations otherwise destined for landfill (828 parcels annually). Our centre provides numerous volunteer opportunities (134 active volunteers), allowing community members to contribute meaningfully to local initiatives. Volunteering helps individuals develop new skills, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
