About This Cause

Lifeafterhummus Community Benefit Society is based in Somers Town, in the London borough of Camden (NW1 1ES). Somers Town is a considered a multi-deprived area despite being centrally located. It is also in a food desert which most stores catering to the lunchtime trade. We run a social supermarket, re-use centre and redistribution network. We have 50 local volunteers and a growing number of resident volunteers who collect surplus food from 45 stores locally on foot, by bicycle, e-cargo bicycle and by car (using volunteer's cars). This is the equivalent of 5 tonnes worth of food every month that is collected, brought to our store, sorted and checked. Some of the food is then place in our social supermarket where local residents who are a part of our scheme can come and do their weekly shop. Most residents also volunteer towards supporting the centre. The remaining supplies are sent to 11 local hostels, 1 after-school club and 1 faith group. Inside our centre we also operate a 'Room of things' where pre-loved items that are donated by residents and corporates are checked, sorted and displayed in a shop-like manner. Our users can shop for what they need to the tune of 8 credits expenditure. No money changes hands. In this space you can find predominantly clothing as well as shoes, children clothing, children's shoes, houseware, kitchenware, stationary, children's books and sometimes some electrical items and depending on space furniture. We run a circular economy project that sees surplus and waste, something no longer needed by one person as a primary resource for another person. Cascading into ultra local behaviour change. We now have a permanent clothing rail in one of the nearby secondary school where sixth formers can take items of clothing that they need. We do outreach also at the local primary school. We advocate on behalf of local residents with regards to housing, housing repairs, equitable access to primary care and any other issue that matters to them. We carry out social prescriptions for local residents for debt, housing, domestic violence, care navigation and more. We also support local residents as much as we can within our capacity with CV writing, interview techniques, referrals, signposting. The food we collect according to WRAP has a value of £15,000 (£5,000 per 1 tonne of food waste diverted from landfill). Given the mixed model of transportation that we use 36% of collections is carbon emissions avoid and 73% for redistributions. We always welcome new colloborations, support and corporate volunteering.
