We are embedded in our Community and have a strong commitment to Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. We value Honesty, Integrity and Transparency and this underpins our activities. We seek Artistic Excellence and support Freedom of Expression. We promote Personal Development and work to provide growth opportunities for our audiences and participants. And we know we cannot achieve our vision alone, so we work in genuine Partnership and Collaboration with organisations and individuals who share our values and aspirations.

About This Cause

198 Contemporary Arts and Learning is a registered charity based in Brixton, London. We are a venue for the exhibition of visual arts, a community hub and an arts education centre which opened in December 1988, contributing to the regeneration of Brixton following the uprisings of the 1980s. Known initially as Roots Community and then 198 Gallery, 198 has grown from a community arts space, which helped nurture the Black Arts movement, into a contemporary visual arts organisation searching out artistic excellence and investing in emerging talents with a particular focus on supporting the development of emerging artists and young creatives. We offer three core strands of engagement: Artistic, Education and Enterprise. Our work is framed by our local communities and the history of the Brixton uprisings from which we developed and is informed by a policy context that calls for greater action on equality and is shaped by demand for diverse visual arts and new pathways to creative careers. We have supported over 400 artists to develop careers as well as curators, arts educators and arts administrators. Our work has been at the forefront of addressing issues of diversity in the arts, providing many opportunities for emerging arts professionals from BAMER communities and we are one of the few remaining Black led arts organisations established in the 1980’s. In 2018 we were granted NPO status by ACE for the first time, placing us within the national portfolio. 198 is also one of the inaugural partners of Tate Exchange at Tate Modern programming events at TEX each year. In 2017 the first Pavilion of the Diaspora opened at Venice Biennale and of the twelve artists exhibited five had been given their first solo exhibition or were nurtured by 198 at the beginning of their careers, demonstrating our position as an important incubator for emerging artists of colour
