Mission Statement
Our vision is one in which every person living with a life-limiting illness within Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding areas has the best possible quality of life. We also aim to ensure that their loved ones – whether they are carers, family members or friends – are provided with the support they need, too. By attending to the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of people affected by life-limiting illnesses, we are able to enhance their quality of life, thereby enabling patients to die with dignity in the place of their choosing and supporting their loved ones both during and after their illness. Our values can be summed up in one sentence: We aim to bring life to days. Life is made up of moments. We understand that. It’s why some of our biggest accomplishments, the things we’re most proud of, are the smallest things. Whether we’re talking to a patient about their hero Muhammad Ali, bringing a bed-bound patient their favourite coffee house drink, helping to arrange a wedding or making sure our patients can be at big family events (whether that’s in person or digitally), we try to make sure these sorts of things are taken care of. It’s just who we are. Whether we’re helping patients live as well as they can for as long as they can or supporting loved ones to ensure everyone can make the most of the time they have, we believe it’s an incredibly important task. These guiding principles define the work and culture of the hospice.
About This Cause
At Weston Hospicecare, we provide physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support to local people affected by life-limiting illnesses for as long as we’re needed. Founded by members of our community in 1989, we have continued to grow and expand the care we provide to meet the needs of our community. In 1991, we opened our Day Hospice, and in 1997, we established our In-Patient Unit. We then moved to our current location of Jackson-Barstow House in 2002. We care for both those with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones, maximising their quality of life and assisting with their symptoms to make their moments together as special as they can be. The care we provide is free of charge, but we rely on our local community for donations in order to continue to provide our services. We make sure that everyone we support gets a warm welcome from our team, who are dedicated to helping to make sure that those we care for can live as well as they can for as long as they can. The hospice consists of a Day Hospice, a ten-bed In-Patient Unit, the Wellbeing Centre, a team of Hospice Community Nurse Specialists, and our Family Support Team, which includes support groups, companions and our chaplaincy and bereavement teams. These services work in harmony to ensure patients receive excellent specialist care, be that at home or in the hospice, and we work to ensure that patients and their loved ones are cared for and reassured throughout one of the toughest experience they will ever face. Our doctors, nurses, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, complementary therapists, chaplain and counsellor will all work together to provide excellent professional care, which is all supported by our wonderful team of dedicated and experienced volunteers. The team also works in conjunction with GPs, consultants and other medical professionals to ensure our patients are well looked after. Everyone we meet and care for has very individual needs. By talking with each person as an individual, we are able to develop a plan that best supports the patient and lays out which services he or she may need access to — be that at the hospice or wherever home is for them. This plan will be specially developed to meet the individual’s emotional, social, psychological and spiritual needs. While our clinical team is excellent at caring for emotional needs, we also have a specially trained Family Support Team that can offer free social, emotional and spiritual assistance for both patients and their loved ones. This support for our patients’ families and loved ones – no matter how young or old – can come both throughout the patient’s illness and after bereavement for as long we’re needed. We know that patients and their loved ones may need more or less help at any given time, and we respect and understand this, so the level of support we offer will be tailored to meet those needs. All of this care is provided free of charge to patients and relatives.
